This article is practical advice on the things to do to get ready for the April storm we are expecting just in case of a power outage. I hope it is helpful.

April has another trick up its sleeve

It looks like mother nature is going to hit us with another big snow storm. Just at a time when we were experiencing such a high from spring fever and starting our seedlings, we get the news that we are going to be hit with what could be the worse snow storm this year! Below I have comprised two lists of things to do to prepare for the worst.

To do List to prepare for power outage.

1. Find all candles in your home and/or buy more.
2. Fill you gas tank just in case you have to stay elsewhere.
3. Make sure you have extra gas for your snow blower.
4. Get completely caught up on your laundry and any other type of household chore that requires the use of electricity.
5. Get caught up on your baking.
6. Make sure you have enough canned and dried goods, including snacks.
7. Make plenty of ice to keep your food cold just in case the electricity goes out.
8. Buy extra batteries for your flash light.
9. Find an alternate way to heat your food if you have an electric stove.
10. Buy extra water if you don’t drink the tap water.
11. Bring any small starter plants indoors.
12. Look for any games that you and your family might enjoy.
13. Make sure your lap top is fully charged.
14. Get caught up on any work that must be done on your computer.
15. Make sure your pets are indoors.
16. Purchase a propane or kerosene heater to heat your home. However, don’t forget to read the directions and you must keep a window opened a little just in case of fumes.
17. Make sure you know where all your extra blankets and/or winter clothes are located.
18. Call your family members to make sure they are prepared.

Additional things to do for those who have a wood stove

1. Make sure you have enough wood to burn in case the electricity goes out.
2. Make sure you prepare enough kindling to start new fires if your fire goes out during the night.
3. If your water is pumped into your house with an electric pump, make sure your hand pump is covered so it does not freeze and you can still get water.

My own personal blessings:

Blessing number One

We had completely run out of fire wood so I went on a scavenger hunt looking for enough wood to heat our house just in case the electricity goes out during this spring storm. The Lord provided us with enough dead wood from all the wind we had in Match so that we should have enough for at least a few days.

Blessing Number Two

I have been having a great deal of pain in my right heal for the past 4 months. However, it has gotten better due to the fact that I have not been working on my feet as much during the last two months. Praise the Lord, today I was actually able to work outside for 4 hours with very little discomfort and just in time to gather enough wood to prepare for this big snow storm. Due to the fact that my husband works nights, I try to do as much of the outdoor work as I possibly can so that he can rest during the day. He works on his feet during his entire graveyard shift.

I hope that I did not leave anything out! Now it is time for me to complete the chores on the list above before the big April snow storm hits! My prayers go out to everyone during this time!

Regarding candles - the big fat church candles are best because they last really long
