A short explanation of what Proxy Servers are and why and how to Use them.

It is not just in countries in which access to the Internet is limited.
It is not just in schools and other monitored venues.
These are obvious venues for which a Proxy Server is useful.

There are many reasons why one who is not trying to trick anyone, (or not trick
them in a criminal style) would chose to use a proxy server.

First; What is it?

What It Is

A Proxy Server is a site to which one connects, and through that, to the site they desire. The I.P. of that Proxy is what is reflected in the list of visited sites.

Every site has an I.P. address; that is four sets of three numbers separated by periods; (this is just an example). The geographical address of a site is available, so that one not only know what provider you are using but where the provider is. It isn't hard for me in my bare feet to find out your provider, and hence where you are in the world.

The Nigerian Scammer, for example, who pretends to be in New York City gets exposed pretty fast when he's using that Cyber Cafe in Lagos.

To avoid this, he can use a Proxy Server which is located in New York City. Hence anyone checking his I.P. might find he is logging on from the Bronx.

This is why so many scammers are able to mask their location; they use a Proxy Server.

Finding Proxy Servers

You can do a search of Proxy Servers and come up with a long list.

Many are up a few hours, then down to prevent detection.
Some are virtually permanent.
It depends on the traffic and needs of the population which needs the service.

Enter; "Free Proxy Servers" into a Search box, and you'll get a list. Many of the sites you will find will have a long list of Proxies, so try as many or as few as you desire.

You connect to the Proxy Server just like any other site. Once you are there you pop in the address of the site you want to go to. As far as the computer is concerned you are connected to the I.P. of the Proxy. You can be on that Proxy for hours and that is the only site that you are connected to according to all the tracers.

Your history will reflect that today you connected to that Proxy, and despite the dozens of other sites you have been on, none are reflected, because you aren't connected to those sites, you are connected to the Proxy.

Why Use a Proxy?

Many times you are banned from a site.
This can be for one of those unjust reasons which you can imagine.

You want to get back on the site, but you can't, because your I.P. is what is being blocked. Hence you use another I.P. and another name.

You log in and participate.

Another Reason

Sometimes you want to create a dual so as to counter the Trolls.

As most Trolls have duals, that is, there is just one of them, but they create 12 different accounts so that an entire Repulsion can attack you.
It will seem that 12 people are beating up on one, when it is one Troll with 12 Nicks.

When you log in via a Proxy it is clear this is a 'different' user.
This 'different' user can join with you and counter the Trolls.

One of the best defenses/offences against a Troll is when you post something sensible, nine idiots attack you and your dual logs in and responds to your sensible post, ignoring those nine idiots.

You respond to your dual, and nine idiots post, and your dual responds to you. It depends on how stupid the Troll is how long he/she/it will keep posting when you and the Dual are ignoring them.

In some cases, normal people will begin to repond to the convesation between
you and your dual, adding another person to those who are not feeding the Trolls.

Eventually, in the best case scenario, your dual can fall silent because there are so many people joining you in ignoring the Trolls.

Scamming the Scammer

Sometimes you want another account on a particular site.
There's a particular scam site which claims to be a
writing site.
It pays once.
Then steals your work and never pays again.

You use a proxy, a different name, post different articles, and get that
first redemption paid into a different Paypal account.

In this way you can scam the scammer.

Some people, who have been stalked are almost afraid to log onto the Internet.
By using a Proxy which disguises their address, they can participate with a sense of safety, for no one can get behind that Proxy.

This is one of the best methods to escape the prison that stalking creates.

Sure people use Proxies to run that scam, look at porn, hack, crack and make themselves obnoxious.
But Proxies have decent uses.
The most important is PRIVACY.

One of the things that you learn when you enter the Cyber Highway is that nothing is
private. You are walking naked down main street on a sunny day.

You enter a Search for colitis and the next thing every other Ad is for some kind
of back passage medication. You post that your a vegetarian and are swamped
with recipes for vegan dishes.

Your browser is loaded with cookies and pop ups and all sorts of spy ware.

You aren't doing anything illegal, immoral or mischeivious. You just don't want
to be walking naked down main street on a sunny day.

So, you use a Proxy Server.

Sure each time you go to a site you have to log in, even if you go to that site
six times a day, but considering your privacy, it's a small price to pay.

Cnwriter; when you connect to any site, they get your I.P. address that is, the address of your provider.
Suppose you connect through Verizon in Charleston.
They know where you are.
They can target you.

If you notice a lot of spam, a lot of ads which seem too 'personal'...for example...suppose you looked up 'cellulite' on a Google, and suddenly see all sorts of ads dealing with cellulite...well clearly they've mined your searches.

When you use a Proxy ... you go through that other computer...if it's in Rumania then everyone thinks you are connecting from Rumania.
They can't mine your searches, because each time you log in you are New because Proxies don't have any record at all.
