Everyone wants to be free. People fight for freedom. Freedom is the dream of everyone. But in reality freedom seems to be in fetters everywhere!

Freedom is only a dream?

Man is born free; but he is found fettered everywhere. Is he free, in the real sense? No. As the technological discoveries have filled the earth, human life is more under the threat of slavery! Yes, the modern man has no secrecy or freedom! He is the slave of devices!

Freedom is only a dream!

Freedom is the dream of everyone. Everyone wants to be free. People fight for freedom. They are happy when they are free. Recently, many countries celebrated their Independence Days or Republic days. Every year countries celebrate their Independence Days. But are the people of these countries really free? Does freedom allow everybody there to do anything?

What is freedom?

When I was a kid I was taught in the catechism class that freedom is the God-given power to be able to be able to act of one's own accord; a person who is free is no longer acts under the influence of someone else. The teaching continued to say that God created men and women free and can choose either good or evil. If we choose a good option, it makes us happy and if we choose an evil one it will cause unhappiness to us and for all.

Freedom and responsibility

As Franklin D. Roosevelt said, "Freedom means responsibility. That is why most men dread it." Everyone wants to enjoy freely, but does not like to fulfill the responsibilities the freedom requires. Freedom is a paradox. You cannot be free by disturbing the freedom of others. You have to appreciate and respect the freedom of others.

St. Augustine, a saint who lived in the fifth century, wrote, "The good man is free, even if he is a slave. The evil man is a slave, even if he is a king." St. Augustine has written in his "Confessions", defining freedom with these words, "You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you." It is only in recognizing God that we can find the real freedom!

Thought provoking and well said, dear VP. Freedom is misused by one percent and that entraps the ninety nine percent! Look at the controls exercised over what we took as free and easy, like flying and banking. We accept all as necessary evil! If it is you and me and most others, we do not require an army, least of all nuclear weapons! siva

It is the political domination that has replaced the other slave-trades. Thank you.
