In 2013 my cat Rugby got very sick. We thought he wasn't going to make it. It turns out he had a urinary tract infection and had to go on antibiotics.

Rugby was sick

Ever since my cat Rugby got sick it has been costing us a lot of money for cat food. Back in December Rugby started peeing blood. The cat is only three years old. Then he started to pee on my bed. This is something he has never done before. My aunt took him to the vet and they checked him out for crystals but said he didn’t have any.

They gave him antibiotics but it didn’t work. My aunt took him back and they did a blood test and an X-ray and he did not have crystals. They said he had a very bad urinary infection. He they gave him a stronger pill.

He got stronger antibiotics

Rugby was getting really sick, lying around in one place for hours just like a dying cat does. I know that from experience. I got my aunt to take him back to the vet and again they gave him a stronger pill.

This time the anti-biotic worked and he was back to normal.

Royal Cannin

The trouble is the vet said the infection was caused by his diet. Now both my cats, Rugby and Junia, are on Royal Canin cat food. Every three months I buy a large bag that costs 81.00.

However, I rather spend that money then to have to spend 300.00 like I did for the vet bills. The vet said if it got worse it could cost around 600.00 which I don't have. My cat is so young I just didn't want to let him die.

What kind of cat food do you use?

Royal Canin is healthier, it also is recommended by vets under the science diet category. There is no by product and corn meal and stuff like that,

My wife is telling me to write this she is not signed in right now, but she has a ton of knowledge on pet foods.
Royal Canin is over priced for its quality, so many foods (such as Hills Science Diet) are too. Look at the ingredient list and you may notice cheap fillers such as by-products and corn gluten meal. If your vet is selling this then he is also suggesting it because he makes money from selling it. For sure the foods sold in Walmart are crap but you can find better food at a pet supply store.

The MAIN THING is to have your cat eat more canned food, and less dry. Any cat with urinary tract problems should eat 3 small meals of canned food daily, with water added to increase their water intake, pick a good food that is low in magnesium.

thanks Mark, the vet suggested several kinds Royal Canin was the cheapest of it all. He doesn't eat it anymore, and we feed him can cat food as well. The vet say can cat food is not good for cats, there is not enough nutrition in them and go cause the urinary tract infection again. The try cat food we buy is designed to protect against urinary tract infection.

My cats eat natural mince meat and rice and are happy, I don't buy all these chemically prepared food for them. They contain toxins to kill.
Yes, I have cats too and they are my favourite pets. You were not letting your cat drink water and truth be told, milk isn't water, its milk. One of my little babies, Angel, drank more water than milk. It was a brown little pet who slept on my waistline dip every night.

BTW, packet food for your pets is for lazy people who cannot cook but want more play time for other activities.

Cheap canned cat food, such as Friskies, is not good for them but there are some excellent kinds that are better, they have more moisture so are better for cats with urinary tract problems.

I had a cat that hated canned food even if it was the most expensive. His favourite dish to lick the plate was a stir fry with chicken livers, pinch of salt, parsley and garlic chopped, because cats are mainly carnivorous animals, although, they may eat a sardine. Tiny biscuits for cats was the only industrialized food that he liked and I always grew some green herbs in a pot where he'd go to clear his tummy.
