In the history, the British government hired Henry Wickham to transport seeds of the tree from Brazil to England. Those seeds were germinated and the seedlings were shipped to Ceylon, Malaysia and Singapore.

Rubber

Rubber has the property of softness, resilience and bounciness. It can be stretched several times from its original length and will return to its original length when released. These properties of the rubber are a result of the chemical structure of its molecules. The molecules of the rubber are large as compared with that of simple chemical compound.

Rubber molecules is made up in a chain of thousands of smaller units of or monomers the chemical compound Isoprene. These long molecules are very much flexible and cross-links, tying these molecules together making the rubber itself elastic.

The history of the rubber dates back in the time of Christopher Columbus. Christopher Columbus observed the natives of Haiti making their play balls out of rubbers.

British scientist Joseph priestly gave the English name “rubber” because of its ability to rub out pencil marks. The first rubber factory in England was built in 1820 by Thomas Hancock. He was able to devised methods for working mechanically with rubbers so rubbers could be shaped. Waterproofing fabric with rubber was developed by Charles Macintosh. Charles Goodyear also discovered vulcanization accidentally in 1839. Vulcanization is done in the way of heating rubber with sulfur.

The Brazilian Havea brasiliensis was considered as the most promising source of rubber. In the history, the British government hired Henry Wickham to transport seeds of the tree from Brazil to England. Those seeds were germinated and the seedlings were shipped to Ceylon, Malaysia and Singapore.

Currently. Asia produces 90% of the worlds total rubber production. This rubbers from Asia were said to be the descendants of the seeds brought by Henry Wickham.
