Situated on the west coast of America, San Diego is one area of California that must be included in the diary of any international golf traveller.

Setting the scene

With over two-dozen golf course within the county limits, which hold appeal to golfers of all standards, in addition to the fact that most are set within stunning natural surroundings, San Diego is a veritable golfer’s dream. A journey around just five of the best top twenty courses available will explain exactly what is meant by that statement.

Located alongside the Pacific Ocean and Balquitos Lagoon this golf course was designed by Arnold Palmer and has often been voted the number one resort in southern California and, following a visit to this venue, it is not difficult to understand why it is worthy of this accolade. With rolling green and challenging hazards designed to tease and test the player, set against the natural beauty of the area, with wild fauna and birds in abundance, the Aviara course provides a relaxing and exciting time for any player who walks its fairways. Furthermore, following a taxing day with your clubs, you can enjoy a relaxing drink admiring the views and beautiful sunset.

Just under an hour north of San Diego city is the somewhat undiscovered Cross Creek Golf Club, located in the middle of a largely uninhabited area. With mountains, large sycamore trees and wildlife forming a backdrop for the fairways, this must be one of the most inspiring courses in the area, with its back to nature feel making it seem like it is just the player against the elements. However, do not let this lull you into a false sense of security for the course itself, with blind shots and elevated tees, will test the accuracy of the most talented golfer. If you beat par on this course you will know that your game is improving.

An imaginatively designed course set in the Ramona Valley, the Mount Woodson golf course, with its rugged setting, provides an almost magical playing experience. For example, the ride across the wooden bridge over a deep ravine to reach number three tee will remind you of a film set. With unusual fairways, pitted with bunkers and other hazards, you will know that you have been challenged as you leave the eighteenth hole behind but it will have been an experience that you will find hard to beat.

Highly rated by business and the community Sycuan's two championship golf courses, plus an 3 par 18-hole fun course, offer more than a golf experience, with fantastic clubhouse, accommodation and a relaxing spa.

The courses are all set within an area of natural beauty and designed to test and improve the skills of the most accomplished golfer, whilst still offering a good days play for all. With water and bunker hazards strategically placed, as well as trees surrounding some holes, you will not have time for anything else but the need to concentrate upon your game. This is definitely a great course for those company’s that want to create a unique team building exercise, while at the same time providing the individual golfer with just the right combination of skilled playing in a panoramic environment.

Torrey Pines sits on top of a mountain and is bordered on one side by deep ravines, rugged countryside and mountains, and on the other by the Pacific Ocean. The pines, from which the name originates, are liberally spread around the two courses, as are the wild fauna and indigenous wildlife.

In addition to the challenging holes, the golfer has to contend with the variant weather that affects this course, which includes sunshine, fog, wind and occasional rain. Many of the current greats, such as Tiger Woods, have graced these greens and all of these players have borne witness to the fact that this course brings out the best in a player.

Closing words

With excellent clubhouse and other relaxing facilities at each, these courses are just a few of the delights that await the serious golfer upon their sporting vacation to the San Diego region, and they will surely tempt a return to visit more of San Diego's outstanding golf courses.

They are bringing back memories as far as places I've visited but I've never played golf. Never had an interest in the sport.
