It is an an absolute myth that dogs are color blind. They actually do see in color, but just not as vividly as us humans. It is a bit like our vision at dusk...

1.Your male dog! See this funny doggy fact:

Male dogs constantly want to leave messages for other dogs to find. These messages always say the same things, they are big and intimidating so they raise their leg to pee, to aim as high as they can on a tree, mailbox or just about anything else

2. The shape of your dog’s face shows how long it will live?

How your dog’s face is shaped determines how long he will live? Dogs looking more like wolves with sharp, pointy faces seem to live longer than dogs with flat faces such as pugs.

3.World’s smallest dog weighed only 4 oz!

A Yorkshire terrier named Sylvia holds the record for the smallest dog. This Yorkie was the size of a matchbox, 2.5 inches tall at the shoulder and 3.5inches long from nose tip to tail, weighing only 4 ounces. She lived for two years and died in 1945

4.Who’s smarter, cats or dogs?

Dogs were first at getting humans to care for them. Cats only caught on 7,000 years later! Evidence suggests that dogs have been living among humans for a lot longer than cats have. Cats have only lived with humans for 7,000 years, while dogs have lived with humans for 14,000 years.

5.Best and Worst Date Magnets

According to this dog fact, these dogs are supposedly the best and worst dog date magnets: while the Pit Bull the worst!, the Golden retriever is rated to be the best date magnet

6.Two really STRANGE dog laws:

In Ventura County, California dogs and cats must have permits in order to have sex!
In Palding Ohio, police officers are allowed to bite dogs to quiet them.

7.The ancient Egyptians revered dogs:

When their dogs died, the dog’s owners shaved off their eyebrows, and after rubbing mud through their hair, they mourned loudly for several days long.

8.What about China?

Domesticated dogs, which includes dwarf and miniature dogs was very popular at one time in their history. Chinese dog trainers were highly regarded and Pekingese dogs were worshiped in Chinese temples.

9.Dogs have a keen sense of hearing:

Dogs can hear certain sounds at distances four times farther than humans. They are able to locate where the sound is coming from in as quick as 1/600th of a second!

10.Do you leave messages for your dog while you are away?

In a recent survey, 33% of all dog owners indicated that they leave messages for their dog on their answering machines and even speak to them.

This was a really enjoyable read. Being both s cat and a dog person, I have to point out that one of the main reasons that dogs have been living in close relationships with men longer than cats have is because dogs were more useful to man. Back in the day when men were hunters/gatherers, and ever since then, dogs played an active role in the hunt--tracking and flushing out animals for the hunters to kill. Another reason is that dogs become very protective of their humans and guarded them against attack from wild animals and from other humans. Cats, on the other hand, besides being loving and affectionate companions, were/are only good for one thing, keeping the old homestead free of rats and mice. Cats have receive and unfair judgment throughout history, except maybe by the Egyptians who worshipped them.

Love the Yorkie picture. Can they see themselves in a mirror? My yorkie seems oblivious when I hold him up to a mirror.

Tony, thank you for asking, yes, indeed they do, although to them it is another dog and depending on the animal's intelligence level, it soon realizes that there is no actual interaction with the image and just accepts it as a part of its environment like shadows, TV images etc.

This probably could contain some, or all of the Guinness records, since there are very few new facts about anything these days, Cowboy. I just liked the unusual stuff, and apparently so do 3000+ other readers. Thank you for reading.

This was really fun to read. I have four dogs - and they are all so special to me.
I didn't realize that the shape of a dog’s face shows how long it will live. That's really good news for me since all of my dogs have long pointed faces.

Love it! Sorry for the slow response but, I have had my grandson since Thursday, I am not made like I use to be, when my kids were young. This old lady is tired!LOL
You have out done yourself on this page young man. Love the trivia, the photos are fantastic. Just an enjoyable piece, one that I will come back to, time and time again. Also, thank you for pointing out that dogs are not color blind. When we hung up our Christmas (LED) lights outside this last Christmas, Bugg's nose went straight for the light and he would sniff, take a step back, not sure what this was and then slowly go back to it and repeat. It was too funny. The Christmas tree about took the guy over the edge. LOL
It must be that the LED lights are more vivid so that is why he could see it better. Interesting and a darn fun page! Congrats on the star page, it is well deserved. As always, thank you for sharing.:)
