Stop the Spammers An Open Letter to all Wikinut Writers

Wikinut is our site, and we love it. Are we going to let the spammers take it over and use it as their free advertising platform?

How do you feel about the people who use Wikinut for free advertising space?

Personally I feel they should be banned from posting anything on Wikinut and the ads that they have already posted should be deleted immediately, if not sooner. These freebooters are growing in number faster than crabgrass spreads in my backyard, and I have more than my share of crabgrass up here on Walch's Mountain. The freebooters plunder our commenting space and break up our meaningful threads and contribute nothing of value. Do you want to stop them as much as I do?

Wikinut is young and operating on a shoestring budget.

Wikinut is a young site and is operating on a shoestring budget. Wikinut cannot afford to recruit enough help to moderate all the comments being posted daily, but there is another way. Give each author the right to moderate the comments being made on his or her articles by making a comment deletion button available to the author of the page. Sure, there is always the chance that some writers will use it to delete any comment that does not praise what they have written, but the majority of writers here on Wikinut would use it properly. Adding this feature would require adding a few lines of code but it would not be a difficult undertaking for the site engineer.

Other sites have this feature, so how can we expedite getting this feature? The last that I heard, the head Nut is working on giving us this feature. What I was not told is when we can expect to get this needed feature.

Is there anything that we can do to speed up the process?

I think that there is. Each and every one of us need to let the Chief Nut know how strongly we feel about this. Send him an email. Write articles about it just as I have here.

Join me on Wikinut and get paid for what you write.

The spammers seem pretty busy here, I am wondering if I will get the first comment, or they...
I have forwarded your page to Wikinut command, I realize they have busy lives (just 2 people as far as I know) so I hope we can be patient.. but I too would like a way to delete such comments.

Yes Jerry, These spammers are really invading our space and I also wish there is a way they can be prevented from advertising on our article spaces.

wikinut reminds me of a message board I used to be on. It dealt with 'Women's Health.'

Some guys in prison got on and started blabbing about something called 'pegging'. The mod went to delete the crap but the owner of the site
said it was Freedom of Speech.
The Mod left, so did everyone else. It had been a really good MB. But hey, in Jamaica we have an expression; If sick man don't care what about the doctor?

I completely agree. I was so excited to receive my first two comments/messages were advertisement links. I was not happy about this. Since I have had some real comments and they are a joy and often a learning experience for me. I do not have a desire to read them back. Good info, joan marie

I am pleased to inform you that a new tool is being made available to Moderators today which will allow them to easily and quickly delete any spam comments they encounter.

Once this tool has been proven reliable it will be made available to all users, so they can delete any spam comments they find on their own articles.

We are also continuing to work on our systems level anti-spam features, and I assure you that we delete many thousands of spam comments already. I appreciate that any spam comments on pages is unacceptable to our authors and readers. I agree with this feeling, and we will continue to work hard to eradicate them.

It is an unfortunate fact of the internet that we receive far more spam comments than legitimate ones, but we strongly feel that an open and simple commenting system is a core part of our site's appeal... so we have a hard fight on our hands.

Thanks.
Sam.

Well said. I totally agree. One way to ensure that people don't just delete others comments is the deleting of nutpoints. If a comment is deleted then those 2 nutpoints will also be deleted. I don't know if that is possible but it would sure make people think twice about deleting. If they want to lose the points then so be it. This sounds like a great suggestion. I hope they can get something worked out soon.

Just a few minutes ago I read a very serious message by Gerry Legister (The Wrath to Come) and then found the first comment to his article a long product list with links.

Jack, I have the feeling that all these spam ads are being placed by one or more people using bots. No one has the time to manually troll the Internet for new article to place their ads on.

I agree, I think the site should be kept "pure." I am getting a little frustrated with some other platforms ( I won't mention names) that are getting inundated with content that is not personal. I think everyone wants to make a profit but there should be some personality, something real in what is written.

Jerry behind you 100% I think the fact sam wrote on this page shows that Wikinut is working towards a solution.
The one thing I would add is it is only allowed to delte spam not comments which we don't like ....
Soam needs to go. great job in saying that.

Absolutely agree with you Jerry. I've only just joined and only have a few pages but I already have two spam comments on my poems. Surely the members doing this should be removed and also as you say there needs to be a way for authors to delete spam comments. Thanks for the article.

I agree with you Dennis. Sam, the chief Nut is suppose to be working on this problem. Most of the spam posters are not members, they are guests on the site posting as guests.

Thank you, Jerry, for initiating a possibility to get the spammers out. And thank you, Chiefnut, too! Fact is, it was quite early days when I wrote for Wikinut and all seemed fine and then I saw some article spammers arriving, so I wrote an article about it! It is just so annoying, but the thing is, they get lost and now with Google really tightening up, there'll soon be less and less spam!

Oh, I forgot! The other day I found a site that pays writers for writing small articles, so I thought I'd sign up, but gosh! I, as a writer myself would have supply the article spun 3 times and they then will spin it up to 1500 times and litter the internet with it. There must be a way of stopping those people!
