To an untrained eye, beauty pageants look effortless. In reality, there is much going on behind the stage no one ever wants the general public to know. This top ten list highlights unfortunate moments many wished would have remained undetected by news sources.

10. English Stunner

Danielle (Lloyd) O’Hara is a successful English glamour model. She became known prominently, after she was stripped of her Miss Great Britain title in 2006. Unfortunately, her nude photo spread was published in Playboy magazine in December of the same year. That was only the start of her troubles, when her alleged affair with one of the pageant’s judges, Teddy Sheringham, was revealed. He was later identified as her boyfriend and said they began dating after the pageant had concluded. Four years later, her title was reinstated. The damage may have ended her pageant career, but she has continued being successful, both on television and as a model.

9. Bombay Burn

Beautiful medical student Lakshmi Pandit was thrilled to win the title of Miss India-World 2004. An international career was bound to happen for her, as it had for former title winner the “Queen of Bollywood” herself, Aishwarya Rai. There was only one minor detail she hadn’t thought about before entering the contest. Recently, she claimed to be married on a rental application, so she and her boyfriend would not be viewed as “living in sin”. She told a little white lie, to assert her independence against traditional societal views. Some came forward and said they understood why she had done so. Her single status was accepted by the pageant officials but in the end she was not able to save her crown.

8. Broken Gage

Miss USA 1957 contestant Mary Leona Gage entered as a representative from Maryland. The crown had barely settled on her head, when rumors about her family life started to fly. She had lied to reporters previously but confessed the truth to having been married twice and was honest that she was currently living with her second husband and two small children. Icing on the cake was spread, when she also admitted to being 18, instead of 21, as she had stated on her contestant application. Blatant violation of the rules led to her crown being abruptly whisked away.

7. Binging Beauty

Tara Connor is a model and multiple title holder for several beauty pageants, including Miss USA 2006. Controversy began to circulate, when reports of her underage drinking were published. A short time later, she tested positive for crystal meth, heroin, and cocaine. To further the insult, reports and pictures of Connor were distributed, as she partied away at night clubs around New York City. It was stated that she was out of control and abusing substances regularly to the point of danger with intervention needed. After learning of the beauty queen’s difficulties, Donald Trump stated on The Oprah Winfrey Show that he believed in giving her a second chance. Therefore, she was allowed to retain her title and beloved crown.

6. Steamy Floridian

So much for a past wholesome portfolio that would have accented Caroline Schwitzky’s Miss Weston USA win in 2011. It is understandable and fairly predictable that contestants may be involved in modeling opportunities to promote themselves. One might be more careful, however, to avoid those that would not reflect a favorable light on a possible win representing her home state. There was no chance of competing in the Miss Florida Pageant, after it was discovered that Miss Schwitzky had won first place when she was 18, capturing the distinguished title of Miss Exxxotica at a porn convention. There is no use trying to sugar coat an explanation.

5. Singapore Slump

On July 31, 2009, lovely Ris Low was crowned Miss Singapore World. She also attained several other wins, including Miss Best Dressed 2009, Miss Dazzling Eyes 2009, and Miss Best Catwalk 2009. It takes a lot of discipline, practice and a certain amount of finesse to carry off that many titles in one year, let alone winning all those within one competition. By September, the seasons changed, along with her luck hiding the credit card fraud she was embroiled in. She claimed to not be aware that her offenses needed to be known before the pageant. Due to having to sign a legal contract, on which she would be forced to declare she was an offender, and because of the emotional pressure associated with it, she stepped down and gave up her crown and title.

4. Regally Relinquished

The United States celebrated its first African-American woman’s win of the 1983 title of Miss America. Unfortunately the year-long rein would soon come prematurely to its end. Photographs that had been taken previously of Vanessa Williams nude, sometimes with other women in provocative poses, surfaced. Penthouse magazine had impeccable timing. Only a short time after being crowned, she relinquished her title but didn’t let that stop her from reaching impressive goals. She went on to a highly successful career as a fashion model, recording artist, actress and record producer.

3. Nevada Negotiator

In 2007, notice was made by the Miss Universe Organization of an outgoing woman who had won the title of Miss Nevada USA in late 2006, after her first attempt in the competition. A couple of months after her win, allegations were made about her lewd behavior exhibited in night clubs a few years earlier. Photographs of Katie Rees kissing other females and simulating sexual acts were released to the media. Her controversial and overtly sexual nature caught on film led her to be stripped of her crown by pageant officials and the organization's co-owner Donald Trump.

2. Bamboozled Babe

Poised, statuesque beauty queen Laura Zuniga was proud to represent Hispanic women in Contest Nuestra Belleza Sinoloa in 2008. She performed very well in the competition and was automatically selected to compete in Miss International 2009. She won the Reina Hispanoamericana title, the first for a Mexican woman. Her crowning glory wouldn’t last. Zuniga found herself in the midst of a narco-trafficking operation. On December 22, 2008, she was arrested along with seven other men in possession of two AR-15 rifles, three handguns, and 53,000 dollars in US currency. The explanation of her involvement with these men changed more than once over subsequent interviews. Ultimately, she was dethroned a few days later.

*1. Blonde Boob

Being in a beauty pageant can be nerve-racking to be sure. After intensive training and having to remain poised constantly, it is easy to understand that sometimes people buckle under pressure. Being asked the ultimate question by a member of a judging panel that could determine your win or loss is never easy. Lauren Upton was asked a thought provoking question. "Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?" Upton responded:

“I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, uh, people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our children.”

No crown or title ensued.

I'm not sure why marital status undermined the chances of some of these ladies. It's a beauty contest, surely they should be judged only on how beautiful they are? Obviously the ones breaking the law should have been disqualified -- but being married or living with your boyfriend should not be a problem.
