A treatise on how terrorism has changed over the centuries.

Terrorism-A Modern Phenomenon

Terrorism is defined as the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion. Terrorist groups try to scare their opponents to obtain goals which are usually political. Terrorism is as old as humans' willingness to use violence to affect politics.
Terrorism goes back to the Sicarii, a first century Jewish group who murdered enemies and collaborators in their campaign to oust their Roman rulers from Judea. It continued with the Hashhashin, a secretive Islamic sect active in Iran and Syria from the 11th to 13th centuries. They dramatically executed political figures which terrified their contemporaries. Their name gave us the English word, "assassins."
These zealots and assassins were not really terrorists in the modern sense. The word terrorism comes from the "reign of terror" started by Maxmillen Robespierre in 1793. Following the French Revolution he as one of twelve heads of the new state had enemies of the revolution killed. He installed a dictatorship to stabilize the country. He justified his methods as necessary in the transformation of a monarchy into a democracy. This laid the foundations for modern terrorists.
Modern terrorism owes its success to and depends upon the existence of a mass media to create an atmosphere of terror among many peoples. The modern terrorists make their acts as heinous as possible because they know that, "If it bleeds it leads." They are not doing this just to see themselves on television. They do it to garner support and sympathizers worldwide. This tactic seems to be working very well.
Terrorist organizations are given money and armaments in large amounts. They took advantage of the black market Soviet produced light weaponry such as the AK-47 assault rifle. Foreign fighters flock to their banners. Governments give them land which they use as a base of operations. They made themselves right at home in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Their sympathizers are legion, some being high government officials. Hillary Clinton is a Palestinian sympathizer.
Since the 1960's terrorists no longer confine their activities to the regions in which they are located. They have gone international!
It began with the hijacking of airliners and has since spread to attacking ships at sea and embassies in foreign countries. Their tactics expanded even further when Black September, a Palestinian group kidnapped and killed Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympic Games. Then they took to bombing airliners in midair like the Pan Am flight over Lockerbie, Scotland. Their efforts culminated in the attack of America on 9/11.
Not being satisfied with political terrorism they've expanded their causes to encompass religion. This is the most alarming terrorist threat today. Groups like Hamas, Al Qaeda, and Hezbollah justify their violence on Islamic religious grounds. They are not alone or unique in this as the same is being done by militant extremists in Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism.
This shift is a departure from any real religious precepts. Mohammed Atta, the architect of the 9/11 attacks and the Egyptian hijacker who piloted the first plane were near alcoholics. The Egyptian hijacker was drinking vodka before he boarded the aircraft. Alcohol would be strictly off-limits for a highly observant Muslim. These terrorists manipulate religious concepts for their own purposes.
They are a very tough enemy to fight and defeat. They wear no military uniform in the traditional sense. They blend in with the local population. Add to that the fact that they use women and children as human shields. When terrorists are defeated militarily there are enough who survive that they just resurface elsewhere.
In defeat they are very patient. This is evidenced by what will happen in Afghanistan once all of the U.S. forces leave. We are now seeing what ISIS is doing in Iraq through Syria. This has been going on for thousands of years with still no end in sight.
