We examine the third of the four elements in astrology, air.

The thinking element

The air element is the third of the four elements in astrology, the first two being fire and earth, and the fourth being water. Fire represents the very breath of life, spirit. Earth sustantiates life. The first of the fire signs is Aries, which represents a springing forth into life from the realm of spirit. Then Taurus, the first earth sign, substantiates life. It is the grounding force. In mythic terms, Taurus is Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Gemini, the sign of the twins, is the first air sign, and it is here where curiosity and the urge to know is born. This, in mythic terms, is when Eve eats the apple of the tree of knowledge.

Gemini

As mentioned above, Gemini, as the first of the signs of the element of air, is where curiosity is born. Aries embodies being, Taurus embodies having or possessing, and Gemini embodies thinking. It is here where spirit (Aries), now in form (Taurus), looks outward to obtain and digest information.

Gemini, in mythic terms, is the winged messenger of the gods. It travels back and forth, here and there, stimulated mentally by all it sees and encounters. It sponges up whatever it sees, collecting data like a computer, asking question after question. What is this? What is that? Like Mercury, its ruler, it is quick, never sitting still or in one place for very long. Gemini is the abiding urge to acquire knowledge, at least some knowledge, about everything under the sun.

The third house of the horoscope is analagous to the third sign of the zodiac. This is curiosity's home. Planets placed in this house act as if they are placed in Gemini. If the Sun is here, I like to say you are an honorary Gemini regardless of the sign placement of your Sun, because you will have to do Gemini things - buzz all around, ask endless questions, and think, think, think. Your Moon in this house fuels you with an abiding need (Moon) to buzz all over the place, as welll as a need to fill your mind with endless facts and figures. You always freely communicate your feelings (Moon) with your Moon in this house. Mercury is in its own domain when placed in the third house. Venus in the third house is smitten, in love, with the pursuit of knowledge for the joy it produces. Mars in the third house is urgent, even impatient, to acquire knowledge, going after it fearlessly. Jupiter in the thrid house poduces broad-mindedness, and an openness to a great variety of ideas. Saturn in the third house communicates sparsely and carefully, and gains knowledge slowly while young, but very quickly as an adult. Uranus, the higher octave of Mercury, invariably produces a genius when placed in the third house (Einstein), Neptune in the third house produces either a bountiful imagination and a poetic communcator or a very fuzzy thinker, depending on its aspects to other planets. Pluto produces a very deep thinker. These people abhor small talk, so when they speak, others listen.

Libra

In Libra the mind seeks to connect to others. Libra rushes out to engage others, and it seeks a meeting of the minds. This is the strategic mind, and Libra is known for producing great military generals. Here is the urge toward equilibrium, toward weighing things in the balance, toward fair play and justice for all. This is a discriminating mind, an artistic mind. The seventh house is the natural domain of Libra, and I like to say that if you have the Sun in this house, then you are an honorary libra regardless of your Sun sign, because you have to do Libra things - look at both sides of every question, seek balance in all things, and hold up to the world the vitues of fair play and justice for all. The Moon in the seventh house needs to tune into others. It has a great capacity to be a wonderful listener, to really 'tune into' others and be completely present for them. Mercury in the seventh house requires a relationship with someone who is at least its equal in intelligence. This is a great conversationalist. Venus is in its own house here. It loves to engage others on a one-to-one basis. It also is a great conversationalist, and very open to listening to the ideas and opinions of others, no matter how 'far out' they may be. Mars initiates relationships very boldly when placed in the seventh house. It is very eager to engage others and 'pick' their brains. Jupiter in the seventh house broadens its awareness and consciousness through engaging others. Saturn takes great care to communicate cautiously and guardedly. It never wants to put its foot in its mouth. Uranus in the seventh house needs partners who are highly intelligent. Neptune seeks communion with others. It's completely open. It 'tunes in' completely. Pluto communicates intensely, even passionately, with others.

Aquarius

Aquarius brings its messages to the collective. Aquarians are well-suited for leading group discussions, well-suited to 'get the ball rolling.' Aquarian thinking is outside the box, forward, innovative and inventive. This sign produces more geniuses than any other (e.g. Thomas Edison). If you have the Sun in the eleventh house then I like to say you are an honorary Aquarian regardless of your Sun sign, because you have to do Aquarius things. The Moon in the eleventh house needs friends, needs to connect intimately with them. This is also a good position for group leadership, and it has a knck for bringing people together to reach a consensus. Mercury needs intellectual friends. Mercury makes a good teacher when placed in the eleventh house. Venus in the eleventh house values friendhip above all else. Venus here will give you the shirt off its back. It is the great compromiser here, having a knack for bringing people together in peace and harmony. Mars beckons friends and indeed the entire collective to which it belongs to spring into action. It communicates in order to motivate. Jupiter gathers everybody around. jupiter is a natural-born teacher when it is in the eleventh house. Saturn chooses its friends with great care when placed in the eleventh house, and it is very good at keeping secrets. You can trust this person not to spill your dirty laundry. Uranus is in its own domain when placed in the eleventh house. It is completely egalitarian, and values whatever it can learn from others. It's completely open to one and all, thinking there's something valuable it can learn from everyone. Neptune idealizes its friends and seeks to make spiritual connections. Here, Neptune communicates at unspoken levels. Pluto seeks to dig far below the surface and cannot abide small talk. This individual needs to communicate at very deep levels with everyone.

Hey Steve, are you thinking of publishing your own ebook yet on all of this, because I think you would find a great market for it. As Mark said, rather than bamboozle us with technicalities, your writing style is so easy to follow..Excellent Star page from one of our favourite Star Writers..
