The Sun in you horoscope is always calling to you to become more than you are and all you can be.

The Astrological Sun

In astrology, the Sun's position by both sign and house placement in your horoscope reveals the path toward your greatest self-fulfillment and self-realization. In mythic terms it is the journey of the hero. You are constantly in the process of becoming at the level of the Sun, as opposed to the Moon, where you are pulled to the past, to what is comfortable and safe. This is why we tend to function more through the house and sign placement of the Moon when we are young, but as we grow older and more mature we move more and more into the realm to which Sun beckons us.

Let us, then, take a look at the sign and house placements of the Sun while briefly interpreting its meaning in each of them.

Sun in Aries, Sun in the first house

Sun in Aries

The Sun rules Leo, but it is also extremely comfortable in the other two fire signs, Aries and Sagittarius. The Sun is in fact said to be “exalted” in Aries, since both planet and sign embody the consciousness of the “I AM”. In Aries, the Sun is the pioneer, the conquering hero, the commander in chief. The Sun here is self-aware and self-preoccupied. It takes charge, and goes where angels fear to tread. An Aries Sun is sometimes very impulsive, but it is loaded with courage, which is why in Tarot the card associated with it is The Fool. Thomas Jefferson. Robert Downey, Jr.

Sun in the First House

The path to fully realizing the self lies in projecting your personality forcefully into your world. “I sing a song of myself,” wrote Walt Whitman, and this could be the anthem for a first house Sun native. In Aries, first house Sun projection is commanding, impulsive and courageous; in Taurus, slow and steady and determined; in Gemini, intellectual, conversational and witty; in Cancer, nurturing, emotional, grasping; in Leo, creative, dramatic, sensational; in Virgo, methodical, analytical, critical: in Libra, charming, strategic, refined; in Scorpio, intense, deep, emotional: in Sagittarius, aggrandizing, adventurous, confident; in Capricorn, industrious, goal-driven; in Aquarius, very friendly, eccentric; in Pisces, soft, diffuse, peaceful.

A first house Sun seems to accentuate its sign's archetype, particularly if the rising or ascending sign is the same as the Sun. Brad Pitt.

Sun in Taurus, Sun in the second house

Sun in Taurus

Individuals born with the Sun in Taurus tend to be grounded in practicality. They are sensual and generally quite relaxed, but they can be intensely possessive and firmly determined. When a Taurus native sets his or her mind to a task, the commitment to it is always one hundred percent. A Taurus Sun is invariably loyal in love and expects the same in return. George Clooney.

Sun in the Second House

Self-realization means that you operate from a foundation of strong self-worth to manifest your life by creating something concrete and palpable. You ‘substantiate’ your self through creating something of material value in your life. You possess natural talent in some area, and you can employ this talent on your journey toward self-fulfillment. Chris Evert.

Sun in Gemini, Sun in the third house

Sun in Gemini

The Sun in Gemini has an eternally youthful quality, and it is intensely curious about all life has to offer. Gemini natives find it difficult to sit still or in one place for any length of time, preferring always to be on the move. Gemini natives are talkative, witty, and often very engaging and highly developed in the art of conversation. All the air signs - Gemini, Libra and Aquarius - are mental, and as the first of these it is preeminently the sign of thinking. Walt Whitman.

Sun in the Third House

The path to self-fulfillment lies in the use and development of your conscious mind. Insatiable curiosity and your native intelligence are your greatest allies in your journey toward self-actualization. Knowledge is power. Dane Rudhyar.

Sun in Cancer, Sun in the fourth house

Sun in Cancer

The Sun in Cancer needs to mother and/or be mothered. It is soft and nurturing and highly sensitive. Cancers can be very personal and subjective, and they are very protective of those they love. They may be very drawn to the past. As the sign that embodies the archetype of the mother, home and family are usually vitally important to them. It is an industrious sign, and it seems to inherently know how to survive in the world. Meryl Streep.

Sun in the Fourth House

To build something concrete from the ground up is the path of the fourth house Sun native. Building and creating growth from your roots, from your connection to past and to family and background is the means by which you succeed in actualizing your full potential. Tiger Woods. Jack Nicklaus.

Sun in Leo, sun in the fifth house

Sun in Leo

The Sun rules Leo, and in this sign it expresses the self. Sometimes shy and introverted while a child, this intensely self-conscious sign blooms as it matures, and it never loses touch with its inner child. It is inherently a warm and loving sign. Leo natives have a strong urge to place their creative stamp upon the world. Those born under the sign of the lion are supremely loyal to those they love, but if crossed or deceived they will end relationships with absolute finality. Julia Child. Dustin Hoffman.

Sun in the Fifth House

“I create,” is the anthem for a fifth house Sun person. You express yourself in this house through tapping into and releasing your creative powers into the world. Act, paint, dance, perform! You are a true incarnation of love. Bruce Springsteen. Paramahansa Yogananda.

Sun in Virgo, sun in the sixth house

Sun in Virgo

Virgo is the last of the signs of personal development, which are self-oriented. Aries springs into life at the vernal equinox, Taurus substantiates and grounds life, Gemini relates to mental development, the personality becomes set in Cancer, and it creates and self-expresses in Leo. If the zodiac is viewed as a journey, then Virgo takes a look back at what has been developed previously and seeks to perfect the self. A Virgo Sun native is analytical, discriminating and very attentive to detail, making certain to dot every “i” and cross every “t”. Virgo is the consummate worker of the zodiac, and it seeks to do everything efficiently. Sophia Loren.

Sun in the Sixth House

You actualize your full potential through analysis and your innate urge toward perfection in order solve problems when your Sun occupies the sixth house. This is the house of crisis, and if your Sun resides here you have a full plate to contend with in this life. The key to self-fulfillment lies in accepting challenges and finding the proper techniques and methods to employ in meeting challenges and bringing problems to resolution. Sixth house Sun natives are often drawn to the healing arts. Bob Dylan.

Sun in Libra, Sun in the seventh house

Sun in Libra

This is the first of the signs of social development, which are other-oriented. Libra natives reach out to others, adept at initiating relationship. Though it is said to be the sign of balance, Libra natives are no more or less balanced than natives of any other sign. There is, however, an abiding urge toward equilibrium that drives every Libra individual. This is a gentle peace loving sign, but it can nevertheless be the iron fist in a velvet glove. Libra is likely eminently fair and just, and they often fight for justice. Libra is often charming and very accommodating. Since the sign is always weighing the alternatives, natives can often be indecisive. Jackson Browne. John Lennon.

Sun in the Seventh House

You define yourself and find out who you are through your connection to others when the Sun occupies this house. You must go outside yourself to find yourself when the Sun is placed in the seventh house. You always seek accommodation and cooperation. Social graces are likely to be highly developed, as is the ability to break the ice and initiate relationships. You have a way of charming people effortlessly. You are a good shoulder to cry on and are likely to have innate counseling skills. C. G. Jung. Sigmund Freud.

Sun in Scorpio, Sun in the eighth house

Sun in Scorpio

Scorpio natives are passionate and often very intense. Thus it is a sign of deep feeling. This is a “fixed” sign, and there is dogged determination here. Scorpio needs to strip away all non-essentials to get to the very depths of matters, and there is an “all or nothing” quality that is pervasive in the character of natives of the sign. A Scorpio is almost always a good detective because of its capacity to see what lies underneath the surface. Often Scorpio people project an intensely sexual magnetism. Grace Slick. Grace Kelly.

Sun in the Eighth House

This is a powerful placement of the Sun. If your Sun resides here you must learn the proper use and management of power in order to best actualize your potential. Your dark side will invite you to abuse power if your Sun is here, so you must learn the difference between the use of power and the abuse of power. You are likely to have had an early and profound experience around death. You need to dig beneath the surface of things – especially relationships – in order to root out and transform whatever destructive impulses lurk there. Princess Diana. Clint Eastwood.

Sun in Sagittarius, Sun in the ninth house

Sun in Sagittarius

The Jupiter ruled sign of the archer is not the least bit preoccupied with small or petty detail, for it is on a grand quest of adventure, wanting to grasp the big picture. Natives are expansive and almost universally optimistic. They are also scrupulously frank and honest if not always tactful. As a fire sign it harbors a healthy dose of self-esteem. It expects the best as if it were a divine right. This is the great wanderer of the zodiac, and it may travel to the ends of the earth in its search for truth. Winston Churchill.

Sun in the Ninth House

In the ninth house, the Sun must seek meaning from life. If your Sun resides here you need to make the journey of discovery. You will travel far and wide – either physically, metaphysically, or both – in order to develop and effect a philosophy or a belief system. Your search and your journey toward understanding is the key to self-realization. The sign and house rule higher education and belief systems. Al Gore.

Sun in Capricorn, Sun in the tenth house

Sun in Capricorn

Capricorn is serious, hard-working, industrious and responsible. Natives are patient and willing to pay their dues in pursuit of their goals. The Sun in Capricorn is generally very achievement oriented. There is a saying that “Capricorns are born old and they die young,” which suggests that natives are often forced to assume adult-type responsibilities while still very young, and life can be difficult in the formative years, but the older they get the easier it becomes to negotiate life’s hurdles. The sign is known for its acerbic sense of humor, and many comedians are born under it. Martin Luther King, Jr. Benjamin Franklin.

Sun in the Tenth House

If your Sun is in the tenth house you will best actualize your potential through integrating your self into society. You will need to rise to a position of some influence, power or authority within the world you inhabit. Your identity is tied to what you do in the world. You do not accept defeat; when life's circumstances beat you down, you invariably get up off the ground, dust yourself off, and climb back up the mountain. Louis Armstrong. Albert Einstein.

Sun in Aquarius, Sun in the eleventh house

Sun in Aquarius

The Uranus-ruled sign Aquarius is always at home in a crowd and friendly to all. Often eccentric and non-conformist, they tend to move to the beat of a different drum. Leo, its polar opposite sign, tends to be personally secure and socially insecure, while Aquarius is likely to be socially secure and personally insecure, which may be why natives of the sign of the water bearer are comfortable in groups and usually have many friends. Often Aquarius exhibits very high intelligence if not genius. Thomas Edison. Abraham Lincoln.

Sun in the Eleventh House

Developing social and/or political awareness is a key to self-fulfillment when the Sun occupies the eleventh house. The larger community of which you are a part needs to be connected to in some meaningful way. The group confers leadership upon your shoulders, and self-realization entails making yourself worthy of that leadership and effective in exercising it. You are extremely popular and always enjoy a large following. Bill Clinton.

Sun in Pisces, Sun in the twelfth house

Sun in Pisces

Pisces, as the last sign of the zodiac, seems to embody within it something of all the signs preceding it. As a water sign it is sensitive and has an uncanny knack for tuning into and picking up the energy around it. They may often be psychic. Natives can be strongly affected in this regard, and as a consequence they prefer environments that are soft and peaceful. There is a great deal of compassion and a strong dose of idealism within the sign, but its shadow side can exhibit deceitfulness. Albert Einstein. Kurt Cobain.

Sun in the Twelfth House

Your twelfth house Sun beckons you to consecrate your life and its work to a cause greater than self. Ego concerns need to be dissolved here for transformation and self-realization to occur. The choice is to serve or to suffer – there is no in-between. As with the Sun in Pisces, there is an urge here to merge with the infinite. The key is to find a cause that transcends personal and subjective concerns, a cause that benefits others, particularly the dispossessed and the downtrodden. Mahatma Gandhi. Jimi Hendrix.

Combining signs and houses

Particular signs always act in the manner of the sign the Sun inhabits, but the house where the Sun resides requires a different field of experience according to the particular house the Sun inhabits. For example, if your Sun is in Aries in the tenth house, you will take your commanding presence and make it serve you in your profession. I tell people who have the Sun in the tenth house that they are “honorary Capricorns,” regardless of the sign their Suns inhabit, because they will have to do Capricorn-type things. In the case mentioned here the native, as an Aries, will manifest his approach to his career (tenth house) in the manner of his sign, in an Aries way or manner. You can combine any Sun sign with any house in this same manner. A second house Sun in Virgo, for example, will take her discriminating and analytical style and apply it toward material and concrete (second house) pursuits. I would call this person, then, an "honorary Taurus."
