The Dwarf Planet Eris, Discovered in 2005. What is its Astrological Meaning?

When a new planet is discovered and subsequently named, the archetype of that planet, in terms of meaning, becomes important in the mass consciousness. The name of the planet is significant, as is its mythology.

The story of Eris

Eris, in mythology, is a troublemaker. She is the female goddess of war, the counterpart of Mars. She embodies conflict, strife, contention and rivalry. In fact she is a very disagreeable character, so disagreeable in fact that she was the only goddess not invited to attend the wedding of Peleus and Thetis on Mount Olympus. She showed up anyway and was turned away. In a rage, she fashioned a golden apple, inscribed on it "To the Fairest," and threw the apple amongst the three goddesses Athena, Hera and Aphrodite, who happened to be hanging out together.

All three goddesses laid claim to the apple, and loud disagreement ensued. Zeus heard the ruckus and came by. Upon learning the gist of the argument he suggested they settle the matter by having a mortal man decide who is the fairest. Zeus chose Paris, because he was the most beautiful mortal man in the world. Paris colluded with Aphrodite, telling her he would choose her as long as she would see to it that he succeed in winning the heart of Helen, who was the fairest mortal woman in the world.

The rivalry between the three goddesses brought about the events which ultimately led to the Trojan War, and Eris considered the discord she sowed between the three goddesses a singular triumph.

The discovery of Eris

Eris was discovered in January, 2005, by a team of astronomers led by Mike Brown, at the Palomar Observatory in Los Angeles. Originally it was named 2003 UB313, but the name was later changed to Eris. It is the most massive "dwarf planet" in the solar system, approximately 27 percent more massive than Pluto. It orbits more than twice as far away from the sun as Pluto, and takes 560 years to make a complete circle of the zodiac. Thus it remains in a given sign for a very long time. Everyone on the planet today has Eris in either Pisces or Aries. It is currently at 22 degrees of the sign Aries.

Eris in your horoscope

Because Eris remains for many years within any given zodiac sign, its sign position is not overly important in terms of meaning in an individual horoscope. However, its transits through signs do correlate to long-term trends in world affairs. Eris entered Aries, the domain of Mars, in the late 1920s, just before the rise of Adolf Hitler and Naziism. It remains in Aries to this day, and continues in the sign until the year 2047. It could be argued that beginning in World War II, technological advancements have resulted in the manufacture of weapons whose destructive power has dwarfed anything previously seen, with no end in sight.

The Uranus, Ceres, Eris conjunction of 2016

Uranus, Ceres, and Eris will all join together in an exact conjunction on June 20, 2016. In order to get an idea of what this may mean for the planet, we must take a look at the archetypal meanings of these three heavenly bodies, and then by combining their meanings perhaps we can make an educated guess as to how the conjunction may manifest on the physical plane.

Uranus embodies disruption. It shakes things up, suddenly and unexpectedly, and it does that with a purpose in mind. Uranus breaks up patterns that have become overly crystallized in order to make "breakthroughs" possible. Its actions are almost always not pleasant, but they are necessary. You may not like what Uranus precipitates in your life, but after you go through whatever it brings you will be glad for the experience, because it awakens and liberates.

Ceres embodies nurturing and the things that make us feel nurtured. Like the sign Cancer, it has a great deal to do with food and feeding.

Eris, as we have discussed, precipitates discord and strife.

My personal take on the stellar events of June, 2016 is that there may ensue calamitous events that disrupt the world's food distribution system. We may not be able to waltz down to our local Safeway supermarket to buy whatever we need.

There could be disruptions in water supplies as well, and great conflicts may arise over people fighting for the water that is available.

This astrological observer would be less pessimistic if Pluto were not also transiting the sign of Capricorn (2008-2024), where it coincides with System (Capricorn) collapse (Pluto).

I think we are going to be forced by events to radically alter our lifestyles in the near future. We are going to have to band together locally within our towns and cities to create effectively functioning self-sustaining communities, where each individual shares his or her own particular gifts and talents with the group as a whole.

Get ready for a wild ride.

"Because Eris remains for many years within any given zodiac sign, its sign position is not overly important in terms of meaning in an individual horoscope"

A great article Steve.

I had a question as I read it.

Are all the previous astrological readings slightly out then because they didn't know about this extra influence?

You answered it in your article, always a good sign of a great article!

You are what you co-create. Stars have a pathway but the Gregorian Calendar doesn't give the patterns of reality within Earth.
With regard to the the One of trouble, well you only get influenced if you let it. When the truth comes out in reality that will be the end of them.
Planets have vibration but the strength is in keeping conformity and being in your own path without deviating as that creates chaos.
The Malaysian Airlines plane that was shot down is the proof of this and the one disappearance is the fact that there is a force that is more supreme that handles everything that stars and mortality cannot touch and influence. Its is what is deemed to be part of the life that is to be it not what you desire. Although your attitude creates it.

Letting a child rule over you always causes chaos and you are the one of brains and the child learns you not the other way round. Its your responsibility to train that child not the child teaching and training you.

I like Uranus the most among outer planets. Not only that I strongly feel its transits, but I also find its movement very creative. Currently it is opposite my Sun, and I would like it to stay there for long long time...Cheers

Another fascinating, compelling article Steve and so very worthy of its star rating. Clearly June 20, 2016 or thereabouts is a period to watch with interest for us all, despite Lady A's attempted* assertions to the contrary.

It's just a lump of rock going round the Sun like all the other lumps of rock! It's position has no more significance than the name that somebody chose for it.

Sorry, Steve - I agree with many of your views and positions, but astrology leaves me completely cold - it's OK as harmless amusement but I get worried when people take it too seriously.

John, when Mr. Halley, the gentleman who discovered the comet that bears his name, said to Mr. Newton, "How could you possibly believe in astrology, Mr. Newton?" Mr. Newton replied, "Because I have studied the matter, Mr. Halley, and you have not."

These "lumps of rock" are full of consciousness, John, whether or not one recognizes it.

My cat acts funny during thunderstorms and many animals are sensitive to earthquakes. I am like my cat, I act funny if I do not understand certain things.

I am not much into astrology but I realize everyone, everything, has a role within the creative process. Even in normal times we are not normal, hence I dread when things start to unravel. Despite the increasingly inter-connective world, we should also learn to live within close-knit communities where we are self-sufficient for essentials going with the concept of putting eggs in different baskets. Intriguing and thought provoking on an esoteric subject for most, thanks Steve - siva

Well, Steve, we think along similar lines, as we've already discovered.

Could be that the warning that a discovery like this one with Eris provides, should be enough for people on earth to wake up and smell the coffee. Most will just turn over and go back to sleep,..
