The Fascinating Axolotls Makes a great pet

Axolotls are one of the world’s original exotic pets. They have been kept as pets since the 19th century and can live 15 years with proper care.

They are an unusual form of salamander that lives in water. Almost all salamanders start out life as tadpoles living in the water and well develop into land dwelling adults. The Axolotls stay in the water and they will develop four sturdy legs. It has a tail fin and gills and it gets its oxygen out of the water all of its life. The Axolotls will rarely develop into a land dweller.

The Axolotls is usually olive green with camouflage speckles, but you can also find them in black, brown, golden, and albino. The albino form has a pale pink body, darker eyes and bright red feathery gills, and they are the ones usually kept as pets.

These animals live in water, so they need a suitable sized aquarium. They are usually sold when they are young. Fully grown Axolotls will be 12 inches or larger. They need a large aquarium, and they can be kept together but they can be aggressive to each other so it is best to keep them alone.

A single animal will do well in a 24x15x12 inch tank. Gravel makes a good floor covering but make sure the gravel is large, so they cannot swallow it, as they like to root around in the gravel looking for food. Use an under gravel or box filter and this will help keep the water clean. These animals come from fairly still waters so do not have to much water movement in the tank, as they will not like it.

Their native home is cool, so they need a temperature of 50 to 68 degrees. They will not tolerate warm water so do not put your tank in direct sunlight.

Axolotls are carnivorous and will accept many foods. Their food will have to be small enough to fit in their mouth in one piece. They are not fussy eaters, so they will eat anything that will fit in their mouth. They like bloodworms, tubiflex and earthworms. They need to be fed small amounts every couple of days, and you must remove any uneaten food to help keep their tank clean. Sometimes it is best to feed them in the evening.

Axolotls are striking looking creatures, and they are rather strange amphibians. They have become very popular as exotic pets and the people who have them just love them.
