We examine the life of John Lennon, a man who touched us all, through his horoscope

John Lennon - a consummate Libra personality

It has been thirty years since an assassin's bullets snuffed out the light of the life that beat in the heart of perhaps the greatest composer of the twentieth century. John Lennon, whose chart appears below, was born under the Venus-ruled, peace-loving sign of Libra, and he seemed to embody within his being - at least publicly - the very essence of the sign. His Sun, appearing on the cusp of the seventh house, indicates a life fully committed to bringing about peace and harmony to the world outside him. Indeed, his song, "Give Peace a Chance" became the anthem for an entire generation opposed to the war in Vietnam.

The combination of the Sun in Libra and the Moon in Aquarius reveals an individual with an abiding concern for social justice (Libra) coupled with a personal need (Moon) to promote humanitarian ideals (Aquarius).

His powerful T-square

The most dynamic configuration in Lennon's birth chart is the powerful 'T-square' formed by the opposition between the Moon and Pluto, each of which is squared by Mercury. Lennon drew upon a deep well (Pluto) of creativity (fifth house) to bring his message (Mercury) to a very receptive public (eleventh house Moon). Mercury rules his third house of writing and communicating, and as the 'handle of the T-square, it drove his powerful lyric talent.

The Moon-Pluto opposition also speaks to his relationship with his mother, and to the women in his life. Sometimes an Aquarius Moon reveals a cold and distant mother, and John's mother abandoned him to the care of her sister for upbringing when he was a young child, and the ultimate 'abandonment' by his mother occurred when she was killed (Moon-Pluto opposition) in an automobile accident while John was still a teenager. Lennon himself abandoned his first wife and baby son, so this theme of sudden breaks and separations from women (Moon opposing Pluto again) played out several times in his life.

His break with the Beatles to go it alone

With Capricorn on the cusp of his tenth house of career, Lennon possessed an ambitious drive to succeed in the world. Moreover, with the ruler of the tenth house (Saturn) in the first house of self, he would have to at some point work for himself rather than with or for others, and his career would have to be an expression of his own inherent self-hood. Eventually, having the ruler of the tenth in the first meant that he would have to leave the group with which he was so powerfully identified and strike out on his own. Nevertheless the theme of partnership also strongly pervaded his chart, with the Sun in Libra poised on the cusp of the seventh house. His teaming with Paul McCartney produced one of the greatest song-writing tandems of all time, and his marriage partnership with Yoko Ono transformed his life.

The end

Lennon was born under an exact conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, which when posited in the first house is very powerful. In addition to the fact that this conjunction very often signifies great success in the world, it also suggests that very fated or destined events occur every twenty years, when Jupiter and Saturn conjoin again. Lennon was twenty years old at the inception of the Beatles, and he was assassinated at age forty. His sudden and unexpected demise and the manner by which he died can be seen by the presence of the sign Scorpio on the cusp of eighth house of death. Pluto, Scorpio's ruler, is opposed by his Moon. He was done in by a crazed and obsessed (Pluto) fan (eleventh house) who was jealous of Lennon's fame and motivated to achieve his own fame by killing him.

John Lennon embodied the very essence of a Libra Sun's love of peace and the humanitarian instincts of his Aquarius Moon. These instincts are perhaps best captured by the sentiments expressed in his song "Imagine," which expresses possibly better than any song ever written, the exalted state which is the ultimate potential of our humanity.

Thank you for another great article and congratulations on the star page! Years ago I read the biography about John Lennon which talked about violence between him and Yoko. Would that be Moon opposite Pluto?

Thank you!
Interesting that his private life was often in contradiction to the lyrics in his songs. I guess he was trying to find Libra balance and harmony through his words. I would love to someday see an even more indepth article on this very complex man.
