The Magic of Numbers : Also their Limitations, thankfully!

Thankfully, what matters in the end is beyond mere numbers. It is those that are not quantifiable. They include love, compassion, contentment, feelings for each other. And nature is beyond them all, both human and computer calculations!

The Numbers Game

Numbers stop us on our tracks, make us ponder where we are, which category we belong to. We try to feel inclusive but also left out when they are not in our favor. Some are said to soothe us – age is just a number; but realities stare at us often! Then few are good with numbers that give them the break ahead while others sit back to make sense of them. Some do come out winners later with big numbers under their belt in terms of wealth! In a material world, numbers are the icing on the cake to add meaning to what is said in words. Numbers turn magical when they hit the right spot. A zero after other digits makes a real difference bit not when before!

Life and Variety in Numbers

There is real life in numbers for those who have an eye for them, even live by them! They calculate endlessly and media is full of them with charts, graphs etc., to add the oomph to news which would be lacking in bite when they are set out without them. Newspapers blare numbers to catch attention to grade the rich, to highlight the distances, be it the next town or a faraway galaxy! Currencies too gyrate by the nanosecond and many are glued to them day and night as currency markets are alive all day. And some are sold dreams to strike it rich by playing with them twenty-four hours a day, five-days a week!

Numbers can also become cold when they turn against us. They create a buzz when we feel we hit the right score. Numbers pick out the winners from the losers. All games are decided by winning margin which is calculated in numbers. Unknowingly, we breathe numbers that are everywhere always within sight. Then the clock ticks away and we also are nearing the end of our lifespan with each tick! We, subconsciously, use numbers to calculate age of others and it makes a difference to some when told they don’t look their real age! Also the clock of doomsday is ticking and the horrific debt clock which is sprinting at tear away speed with none bothering to halt it! Looks like when water goes above our heads, does it matter by how many feet?

Heed the Numbers, but Life beyond Cold Statistics

Numbers do matter but meaning in life cannot be quantified, thankfully. When we get obsessive with numbers, it can also turn out to be our bane and downfall. Countries are compared and also individuals. But happiness and contentment is beyond the cold numbers though some are trying to assign numbers to them too! But they should fail as let an uneducated, humble soul be above them limited only with a desire to get ahead blinded by fascination with numbers like many others.

Our peace of mind depends on how we draw the line with numbers. Let it matter where it matters, but also consigned to dustbins when they come between to divide us. Our earnings and wealth make sense through numbers but beyond just the cold facts, beware the danger of unwanted comparisons. It can soon lead to jealousy and other negative traits.

Numbers are a wonderful statistical tool, for mathematics, science and economics but we have a surfeit of them. I have seen many glued to them, able to track them while on the move with all types of contraptions. But do they enrich our lives? It depends on who you are talking to, but for me the numbers are cold and I would like to keep it that way at a safe distance! Hopefully, they will be erased when we are done, when my time is called at the right time, of course. Let my deeds and thoughts leave moments of legacy on the few I have managed to touch in my life. Those include those in our dear Wikinut. Though I am inactive at another site now, few from there remember me with kind words; that gives me hope that more than the cold numbers, words and thoughts will trump. And nature is enjoyed without any numbers attached to it; what an unadulterated joy!

Some people's minds are more mathematical than others, they see numbers in everything.

Remarkable preamble to life and also to what we perceive to lie beyond. Our involve-ment with one another here on wikinut is poignantly captured in this line: "Let my deeds and thoughts leave moments of legacy on the few I have managed to touch in my life." Thank you Siva.

Thanks TP for your encouragement. Let us enjoy the moments wherever we are as we are all same - despite our being carried away by dis-similarities in outward looks and outlooks - siva

Nancy, do I have to say how much I missed you? I am indeed so happy to see you here and renew our friendship. I firmly believe that we are destined to meet our dear and near ones again and again (not restricting to present state of being!) and the time in between make us all the more eager to catch up on our lives. Thanks again for your support. I will catch up with your lovely works soon - siva
