The Story of Razor, My Turtle

About a year and a half ago, my mom bought me a green turtle that was about twice the size of my palm. I've had him for about six months and in those six months, I enjoyed his company.

When I Met Razor

On our way home from school, my mom presented me with a brown box which I saw was jiggling alot. When I looked inside, I saw a large green monster struggling to get outside.
My mom explained it was a turtle and it was meant to keep our first little turtle company.

Upon getting home, I lifted him out of the box and he instantly began scratching my hands with it's razor-like nails. I then decided to name him Razor, although I never gave him a last name.
After cleaning him, I placed him in the bowl next to my sister's turtle, Squirtle.

A Strange Turtle

As much as I loved Razor, he was a strange turtle. He moved with great speed through water and land. Whenever I picked him up, he would instantly start scratching but he would cease after a little while.

Every morning, I'd pick him up from the water bowl and carry him outside to the garden. Then, I'd just leave him there and just watch him. At first, he would take time to recover from the lifting. Then, he'd bring his head out of his shell, look around and start moving towards the dirt. He'd stop at the dirt and and then he'd begin digging down at the dirt using his sharp nails.
After a while, the hole would get so deep that he would be able to fit inside it. But Razor would still keep on digging until he was completely underground. Then, for the rest of the day, he'd just stay there until I would bring him back in at night.
And that is Razor's everyday lifestyle.

However, Razor did give me trouble sometimes such as this one time when he squeezed to the outside from under the gate. Luckily, our guard spotted him and brought him inside.
Another time, it was raining and the mud had gotton wet and icky. So, when I went to bring Razor back in, I had to dig around everywhere until I could find him. And by the time I did, my hands would be covered in muddy dirt.
After bringing him in, I'd wash him. Everytime I do, he'd extend his incredibly long neck and let out all the dirt that was trapped inside, giving me more washing to do.

His Neck

One of the things I found cool about Razor was his unusually long neck. It was the longest neck I had ever seen. (Just look at the picture!)

He brought the neck to good use sometimes.
Once when he wanted to move to the garden from the pathway, he had to cross a steep step. He managed to get into the garden but he was knocked upside down. I moved to prop him the right way around but then I saw him bring out his neck.
And with shock and surprise, I saw him use his neck to bring himself right side up!
Yes, his neck! One single neck was all it took to swing his whole body the right way!
He was one heck of a turtle!

Shifting Houses and Razor's New Friends

Although Squirtle died, Razor was there when we shifted to our new house. I placed him in the same box he was brought in and my driver and I drove to our new house.
But on the way, Razor manage to climb out and I found him crawling around in the backseat.

We had purchased some fish and we placed Razor and the fish in our new pond outside. Pretty soon, Razor began to have fun with the fish. But I couldn't say the same for the fish.
Razor would literally sneak behind a fish and would extend his neck until it was just inches behind the fish. And then suddenly, he would ram his face directly into the fish and they would swim in all directions. It was hilarious!
I knew Razor and I would love it here.

Death

However, Razor's time was almost up.

On the morning of June 26th, 2009, I woke up and walked outside to the pond. At first, I couldn't spot Razor. But our pond had another hole in inside it. That was Razor's favourite spot.
Sure enough, I spotted him.
I picked him up and set him outside the pond.
But then I knew something was wrong. His eyes were closed and they wouldn't open. I set him upside down but his eyes remained closed.

I realized the truth soon after but I didn't want to accept the truth:
Razor, my best friend, the greatest turtle as told by many and the pet to have survived the longest under my care, was dead.

My driver walked by and he confirmed the death. He then proceeded to bury him outside our house.

For about ten minutes, I mourned his death but I knew Razor was gone and I had to accept it. He is with Squirtle now!
And that is the story of the great Razor. The one and the only!

What's strange is that Razor died just a day after Micheal Jackson died. I'm sure Razor would love his new home now!

A lovely story.
A lot of people, would think that turtles could
never compete with dogs and cats in the pets stakes, but Razor has proved them wrong.
Thanks for that moving history
of an animal who was as much a friend
as a pet.

SiddiQ, what a wonderful story. I am so sorry for your loss. You made such a great friend for razor.
I just love how pets can make our lives so much more, than if we never had them. Great job my friend.
Congrats on the star page, it is well deserved.

This might sound funny SiddiQ, but there is a tale about turtles, the moment you touch them, you'll get to be forgetful! Just a tale though...

what a lovely story! thanks for sharing. It's always sad when a pet or a friend dies but what you and they bring to each other during your time together far outweighs the grief
