The Third House of the Horoscope Speaks Volumes About the Way You Think

In this article we make a thorough examination of the third house of the horoscope.

Curiosity is born in the third house

Around two years old, the child moves into his or her third house phase, the Mercury/Gemini phase, when he or she begins asking endless questions and is interested in everything it sees, feel, touches or tastes. Curiosity is born here, and the child at this stage becomes eager to digest all the information and data he possibly can. The logical mind is now developing at a rapidly increased pace. Eyesight and hearing are moving into overdrive.

The sign on the third house cusp

The sign that sits at the beginning of the third house, on its cusp, tells us a great deal about how the native will digest information as well as how he or she thinks, and the manner by which he or she will communicate.

Aries - Aries on the third house cusp is a lightning fast thinker, and talker. This individual cannot collect information too quickly. Verbally, the native expresses thoughts boldly, honestly, courageously, and with little thought for how they affect others. There is great honesty here.

Taurus - With Taurus on the third cusp, individuals are very measured in both thinking and speech. The native never just 'runs off at the mouth.' This is a great listener - both patient and attentive.

Gemini - Gemini on the cusp of its natural house is the mark of very high intelligence. There is great curiosity, and the native develops at least some knowledge about a vast variety of subjects. Everything under the sun innterests this person. He or she is a marvelous conversationalist, and is never at a loss for words.

Cancer - Water signs absorb information, and Cancer is pre-eminent in this regard. Information goes deep within the mind and is stored in the memory, which is prodigious. This individual never forgets, and he or she is likely to be abler to remember conversations verbatum years after they occur.

Leo - These natives seek attention, strokes and applause for the way they communicate. They may be loud in speech, talking over others. They are fun conversationalists, however, and they like to 'play' with words.

Virgo - These are highly critical and analytical thinkers, who miss very few details. They organize their thoughts very well, and they will notice the flaws in the reasoning and communication of others. Their brains think in terms of practical solutions to questions.

Libra - This person is not sure how to think or what to think until he or she knows what others think. He or she will learn how to think and what to say by listening to the way other people express themselves verbally. In his mind, the native forever weighs alternatives.

Scorpio - This is a very deep thinker, a strong and silent type. With Scorpio on the third cusp, the native watches and listens. He or she never engages in small talk. If the native has nothing important to say, he won't say anything. Consequently, when this person talks, people always listen.

Sagittarius - The native is a broad thinker, always interested in exploring knowledge and carrying it farther. Every answer leads to another question. Consequently, he or she will pay little attention to details and sometimes to facts as well. The native will search far and wide to accumulate knowledge.

Capricorn - These natives are the world's most practical thinkers. They are common sense communicators. They are very direct, down-to-earth and crystal clear in the way they communicate and as a result are most easily understood.

Aquarius - These natives are likely to communicate in a unique and innovative manner, and what they say can often shock other people. They have a streak of unmistakable genius in them. They like to collect information about off-beat subjects, and they sometimes they talk of things nobody else has even a clue about.

Pisces - Pisces on the third house cusp absorbs information like a sponge. These people don't learn like the rest of us. What they know they know, but they don't know how they know it. They just know it. Their speech and thinking can be confused and muddled, or it can be poetic and inspirational. They communicate with compassion and care for how others will receive what they say.

Planets in the third house

Sun - You will best actualize your potentials with a third house Sun by constantly buzzing around within your environment. It will be next to impossible for you to sit still or in one place for very long, so you will lead anything but a sedentary life. Relationships with siblings are important all of your life - yours and their lives are destined to be inextricably intertwined in very important ways. You are a completely thinking person. You may not trust the realm of feelings and emotions too strongly. Somehow that psychological environment seems murkly and messy - not logical the way you like everything to be. You may be an arresting speaker or writer.

Moon - This is quite the opposite situation from having the Sun in this house. Here, the thinking and feeling natures are not separated, but joined together at the hip. You always say exactly what and how you feel. Thus, you always communicate with feeling, and you are very good at talking about your feelings and getting others to talk of theirs. Your emoptional bond to one or moreof your siblings is very strong.

Mercury - Mercury, the winged messengerof the gods, rests in its own domain here in the houseof the conscious mind. Insatiably curious, the native thinks very fast on his feet, and much like those with Gemini on the third house cusp, loves to her his own voice. There is great intelligence here, and the native is likely to be a walking encyclopedia of information.

Venus - There is a great love of knowledge with Venus here. Natives communicate in a soft and soothing speaking voice, and they can be absolute charmers when they talk. You're drawn in, often magnetized, by their speech. If your Venus is here, you may possess a great singing talent.

Mars - Mars in the third house often talks before it thinks, so eager it is to say what is on its mind. You will say whatever your thinking in the moment and let the chips fall where they may. You love spirited debate, and you may need to caution yourself against trying to dominate all conversations. Relations with one or moreof your siblings may be a battleground area of your life.

Jupiter - Jupiter confers broad and expansive thinking, and not much care for detail. You are interested in the big picture. Travel is always growth-producing and highly educational. Communicating clearly comes very easily. You write well and are well-understood. You wouldmake a good teacher.

Saturn - Quite the opposite of Jupiter, Saturn thinks with care and caution, and communicates the same way. You think deeply, but you could be prone to pessimism and depressing thought patterns with Saturn in the third house. As you getolderyou teach yourself to think in a more positive direction. If you have siblings, you are probably not close to them in adulthood. If you are older than they, you may have been burdened with caring for them while you were growing up.

Uranus - Uranus is the 'higher octave' of Mercury. Where Mercury refers to intelligence, Uranus refers to genius. Einstein had Uranus in the third house of his horoscope. You think outside the box, and you have the unmistakable mark of genius upon you. Others find yourway of communicating at once fascinating and shocking.

Neptune - Much as with Pisces on the third house cusp, Neptune can confer fuzzy and confused thinking and communication, but it is just as likely that the native's thinking is imaginal and inspired. There can be a deep, deep "knowing" and perception that extends beyond the physical realms to the realm of spirit. With Neptune here, you will always seek the place where you can connect and find unity with others through communicating with them.

Pluto - In the third house, when Pluto speaks, people listen. You are a powerful communicator, never wasting words or saying anything extraneous. You get straight to the point, every time. Conversationally, small talk is anathema to you. Let's get deep, or let's not talk at all.

Another superb article for your astrology book! Now what about people like me, who have no planets in the third house? :)

Well, what's the sign on your third cusp? That will tell you a great deal. And the sign your Mercury inhabits? The aspects Mercury makes to other planets?

I have a chart somewhere, I think it is Venus for me, but cannot remember for certain. In fact I think it was Venus for a lot of things for me- otherwise I am a Vigro.

You;re such a nice guy Mark, that I'm certain Venus is very prominent in your birth chart. Why not e-mail me your birth data - your date, place and time of birth, to steve@goldenwolfe.com, and I'll e-mail you back an interpretation of your horoscope.

This has made me kinda nervous, Steve, and perhaps, Lewis Adler too, the 3 of us being born under the sign of Libra. Or am I missing something here?

This applies not to all Libras, but to natives of any sign who happen to have the sign Libra on the third house of their horoscopes. To know which sign that is, we need to know the birth time.

Excellent article Steve, although astrology doesn't rule my life I do find it incredibly interesting. My fascination started a long time ago after reading Linda Goodman's books. Happy New Year!

A close friend of mine reads horoscopes and I remember that she used to send requests to the Astrological Society for progressions on different people's charts. She was astoundingly accurate and described some of my family members whom she had never met.
