Affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to make money online. However there is quite a bit of trial and error involved in this method. That's why you should take small steps, be in it "for the long haul" and not expect too much too soon. And if you apply the approach listed here you're sure to start earning money before too long.

Build a Website About a Subject You Know and Enjoy

There are many different ways to make money online. But from my experience the best one of all is affiliate marketing. This is because it costs next to nothing to get going. You just need a website. (Actually, you can even do without one. But it is preferable to have one, in my opinion.)

And the best way to start is not to think about money. Just "follow your passion" as they say and get a hosting account. There are excellent free ones like Weebly that will give you all the tools you need for no cost at all. They also often have blogging tools attached which simplify things considerably.

Just start building pages about your chosen subject. It's advisable to use a top level domain eventually. But you can do that when you're good and ready.

Before long you'll have an interesting and informative website up there. And make sure to write specific and relevant blog posts when you find the time. Even without trying to draw search engine visitors, you're almost sure to see a trickle of them coming in after a couple of months.

Draw Targeted Traffic to Your Website

With your website taking shape you should then start to build backlinks to it so that it starts to move up the rankings for various keywords related to its subject matter. If you haven't already given it a top level domain by this stage, then it's a good idea to do this now. You want all the "search engine juice" being associated with the domain that you own, after all.

Building backlinks can be a laborious process but is definitely worth it in the long run. The main methods are article marketing, forum posting, blog commenting and social bookmarking. Do a bit of each from time to time, varying the keywords that you use in the anchor text of your backlinks (but always keeping them relevant, of course). Do this and those targeted search engine hits will slowly but surely increase in number.

Remember that while Google, Bing and Yahoo are great sources of targeted traffic, they're not the only way to get it. Twitter, too, is an excellent source. Just join up and start tweeting about your subject and follow those who share your passion. After a few months of consistent tweeting and following you'll have a steady trickle of interested visitors from that site alone. And many of these will also be bloggers and webmasters themselves, so you'll probably get the odd backlink from them too. That helps greatly with SEO.

Choose Relevant Affiliate Programs to Promote on Your Website

Now that you've got a decent number of hits from people who are interested in your website's subject matter, it's time to include the odd banner or ad for a relevant program. It doesn't matter what your website is about; there's sure to be an affiliate program that fits. You just have to join some of the big affiliate networks such as Commission Junction, Linkshare, Share a Sale, Clixgalore and Check My Stats.

Unless you are already getting huge traffic, then I'd suggest you start by looking for pay per lead programs to advertise on your site. This is because a much higher percentage of people who click on your ads sign up to these programs than actually buy things. So you will tend to start making money a lot sooner. That's important, especially when you're new to the game, because if you go a long time before earning a commission it can easily make you want to throw in the towel.

Keep Building Traffic and Trying Out Different Affiliate Programs

At this point, if you have chosen some good, popular programs to promote, then you'll already be earning a bit of money. But if you aren't, don't worry. It's just a process of trying out different affiliate programs to see which of them will start bearing fruit.

Be sure to give each one a good go before ditching it. Remember that a banner has to get quite a few clicks before it will convert into a lead. And only a small proportion of those leads eventually become sales. (That said, if you are promoting a pay per sale program and you get a big percentage of what is a substantial amount of money the wait can most definitely be worth it.)

As well as constantly trying out different programs and tweaking your selection of banners, ads and their placement on the website's pages, you should keep adding more specific and relevant content to your site. That will bring in more and more visitors in time. It will also give you ideas about other affiliate programs to promote. And don't forget to keep building those backlinks as well, since this will ensure good rankings for your chosen keywords.

It might take a year or more. But as long as you keep using these methods you're sure to end up with a consistent flow of traffic and a slowly growing income. And once you've got your project to this stage you won't need to do much work to keep it chugging along. That leaves you with more time in which you can perhaps start a new money making website on a different subject that you really enjoy. And now that you know what to expect you can get this one earning affiliate commissions much sooner.
