The first dance class can be overwhelming for both child and parent - here are some handy tips so you'll know what to expect!

Tips for the First Class

So your little girl or boy is attending dance class for the first time. How exciting! Whether it’s your 3-year-old starting Creative Movement, your 7-year-old going for ballet, tap or jazz, or even a preteen/ early teen who’s just recently discovered a love of dance, this article will help you prepare for that special day. You might be confused about how to do her hair, what to make him/her wear, or where this journey will take you. Don’t worry; everything’s discussed here in this Q&A-style guide.

What should my child wear?
If your studio has guidelines on this, follow them! Often they will either provide the clothing and shoes themselves, or tell you where to purchase them nearby. If not, usually a tight-fitting leotard, tights and appropriate slippers will do for ballet (tight shirt and opaque tights/shorts for boys). Younger children up to the age of 6 or 7 might be allowed to wear a frilly tutu with their leotard. Just go to a local dancewear store – they’ll know how to help you.

How should I do my girl’s hair?
If your girl has long hair, first tie it up in a tight ponytail, then make a bun using bobby pins and a hairnet. Short hair can either be tied up in just a ponytail, or pulled back with a hair band. Note: for some types of hair you might have to use gel or spray to keep it in place.

Will my child enjoy the classes?
This is a must! Never be scared to leave a studio if your child isn’t enjoying dance – the environment must feel safe and nurturing so he or she can learn well. And remember, there are plenty of studios around so have a look and maybe try out different classes before signing up.

What does my child need to know for the first class?
Usually classes for beginners don’t require any knowledge. The teacher will show your child some safe exercises and stretches, which s/he can repeat at will at home.

What should I look for in a studio?
This is rather a large topic and I have now posted a separate article on this (How to Choose Your Perfect Dance Studio). For children, it is especially important that all choreography and costumes are age-appropriate and that enough class time is provided for them to properly learn the chosen dance form.

What can I expect in dance for my child?
If s/he decides to dance just for fun, this will bring benefits in almost every aspect of life, without a lot of pressure.
If s/he decides (and has the physical/mental ability) to try out for a professional career, it will most likely be hard and may impact social and school life. But don’t stop your child if it’s his or her dream! A life of doing what one loves best is the most fulfilling experience anyone could have.

So, make the move and take your child – boy or girl – to their first ever dance class. Don’t forget to take pictures; this might be the start of a great thing!
