Our ideas of life and death, life after death, good aims of the society, truth, beauty and goodness etc., are the values. All these things human life dynamic, successful and purposive.

The stage of technical invention

Ottawa, in his book `education and society' clearly states, `the culture of a society during a given period is determined by the interaction of two classes of factors- 1. the stage of technical invention and scientific discovery it has reached and 2. the dominant aims and values of the society.' in other words, social change occurs through the interaction of technological techniques and social values. Both are essential for social change. As these two factors change the society, it is necessary for understanding the meaning and significance of these two terms.

The development of these techniques depends on inventions and discoveries.

Techniques are the means by which the members of a society satisfy their basic human needs for food, shelter, clothing. Communication, social organization, reproduction etc. The development of these techniques depends on inventions and discoveries. History is the record which proves that man came to the present position from simple hand tools, the use of fire etc. Through social from simple hand tools, the use of fire etc. Through social inventions, man developed social techniques to satisfy his needs of living together in a group. It includes languages, types of family, trade and commerce, forms of government, education etc.

The society depends on both and they are inseparable.

From the above discussion, it becomes quite clear that both techniques and values change and it is their interaction which determines the nature of a society at a particular time. So far as social change is concerned, we cannot think of one independently of the other. The society depends on both and they are inseparable.
