Water Softener maintenance guide: We must do it!

We all need pure water for various uses in our homes, which is why some people will go to an extent of installing water softener systems in their homes. However, there still can be impure water even with the provision of water softeners. The quality of water that comes out of the softener system is proportional to its efficiency. So then if your purification system has some malfunctions for one reason or another, you might obtain even lower quality water than that which flows in. Keep in mind the trapped compounds in the softener systems which contribute to hardening the outlet water.

Like any other equipment, these water softening systems are prone to degeneration which reduces efficiency. More so because of the buildup that accumulates within components of these systems over time and affects the entire performance. As a user of these systems, you can manage some of the simple maintenances though a lot more technicality might be needed at advanced stage. To learn how to do this you need do read on Water Softener maintenance guide.

First you will need to disconnect water supply from the water softener system as well as any electrical current flowing into it while releasing pressure in the tank. You may then proceed with the three fixation process to the softener systems.

3 simple fixes to water softener systems

Generally the water softener system is comprised of three major distinct parts. These are the brine tank, the iron-fouled resin bed and the resin tank injector.

Clean the brine tank: The brine tank is also known as salt tank. Salt forms inside it and at the base as a result of adding too much to it during water processing. You will need to break up the salt with a broomstick and then dispose it. The remaining traces of salt in the tank can be removed by cleaning with hot soapy water followed by thorough rinsing.

Clean the iron-fouled resin bed: In cases where the incoming water contains iron, the resin bed gets fouled by iron deposits in the process of purification. The degree of iron deposits on the resin bed varies with the level of impurities in the salt that’s added for purification process. To clean the resin bed, you will need to run it through a manual regeneration to wash out the waste water. Firstly, remove the cover of the control valve and then unscrew the regeneration knob with a flat-blade screw-driver. Depress the knob and turn it anticlockwise before you can start servicing it.

Clean the injector: Cleaning of the injector is the third step to completing the water softener maintenance task. It is located at the top of the water softener near the brine line and behind the access panel. It controls the amount of brine that flows to the resin tank, which gets it clogged in the process. To service it, you will need to unscrew the access panel as well as the injector itself. You then need to check on the injector screen for any obstruction and wash it off incase. You may need to replace the O-rings if they are worn-out. When it is all done, you should reassemble the entire water softener system and fix it back to its place as its back to its proper condition.
