The World Bank practice is happy to announce the opening of the public voting processfor the Sanitation Hackathon!

call by World Bank

Nearly half of the 2.5 billion people who lack access to sanitation do have access to a mobile phone, creating important opportunities for new approaches to old challenges. The Sanitation Hackathon is a m21st century approach to sourcing innovative, technology-based and citizen-centered solutions to sanitation sector challenges.

The readers may please take a moment to look through the 28 apps. (applications) that have made it through to the final round of voting, and cast their votes for the People's Choice app winner. They can vote using Facebook and Twitter or by sending an email with the name of their favourite app to zdepooter@worldbank.org. Finalists will be announced on World Water Day (March 22nd) and the winners will participate in an award ceremony in DC (District of Columbia) and an inspiration tour of Silicon Valley in April.

The Sanitation Hackathon has engaged water and sanitation experts, mobile app developers, technology experts, and local communities in a process that has involved:

* Extensive consultations with communities on sanitation sector needs

* Iteration with subject matter and technology experts to define 134 problem statements

* Two-day hackathon events held simultaneously in 40 cities around the world, with over 1,000 mobile app developers participating and

* Over 70 prototypes developed, with more than 700 people registering to continue working on their app through the Sanitation HackatHome website.

The Water practice and ICT unit of the World Bank Group wish to thank the innovators, experts, and external partners, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, for their engagement and support in making the Sanitation Hackathon possible. They look forward to tallying our votes as they work to identify the Sanitation Hackathon apps that represent the best new approaches to overcoming sanitation sector challenges.

At the Sanitation Hackathon (Dec. 1-2, 2012) civic technologists developed projects that address challenges facing the sanitation sector. In the Sanitation App challenge, hundreds of these innovators refined their ideas into applications ready to make an impact.

Yes fresh water and proper sanitation is very important. For continued human existence we must also control our population growth too.
