What Makes Good Art?

What is it that makes a painting or photo great? It's quite simple.......

Not just Michelangelo and Ansel Adams

Are Michelangelo, DaVinci, Munch, Monet and Renoir, Ansel Adams and so on the only persons who ever created great art? Of course not, but what qualifies a piece to make it into the quality world of greatness?

In my opinion it’s quite simple: A great piece of art, whether it’s a painting, a photo, a sculpture or a book, is something that makes the viewer feel something, see a connection or a story they can continue on their own. It makes the reader want to continue reading till the last page. It doesn’t necessarily have to give you a good feeling. Sometimes a piece was created to provoke you, and it might be disturbing. An image with a horrible war scene can also be a great piece of art because it comes with a message. If you get the message by looking at the photo it’s a good photo that transmits the feeling of despair. The photo’s purpose was never to make you feel good, but to make you understand what goes on in the world, and if you get it it’s a great piece of art. Many paintings and photos are created just to provoke you, and some are made just to please the artist.

If you like it, buy it!

If you like a piece and it speaks to your feelings and your taste it’s good! For you! It doesn’t matter if the composition is lousy, or if the artist in totally unknown. If you can’t take your eyes off it and you keep returning to study the details, I’m sure it’s for you! You’re entitled to your own opinion, so don’t let anyone tell you it’s not good. Many images are great just because they were made. Look at children’s drawings! They don’t follow any rules, and that alone makes them unique, and you my friend, are lucky to get a glimpse of their world and their love!

Successful Art

However, if a painting or photo strikes a chord within your soul this is not necessarily what makes it a successful piece of art. It needs more than one happy viewer. Successful art needs to be around long enough to give a lot of people the chance to enjoy it. It needs to strike an emotional chord within several people

Support the Living Artists!

Gallery owners will look at art and often tell good from bad based on their experience in what sells and what doesn’t, but if you’re not thinking of your purchase as an investment you should buy whatever pleases you. I also urge you to buy directly from the living artists. The dead ones really don’t need your money! Instead you will pay for that artist’s chance to create more and bring more beauty into the world and into your home.

I am an artist, indeed it is a subjective thing but for me art should mean something and not be just about getting a sale.

Yes Mark, it should mean something to the viewer or at least to the artist. :-) Sometimes the importance and meaning lies in the fact that it was created.
