What To Do When An Earthquake Strikes

You never know when an earthquake is going to strike. But you can always be prepared incase one strikes.
Here's an article that will show you how to avoid earthquake casualties.

Run Out Of The Building

If you are in a building when an earthquake strikes, always run out of the building and out in the open. Try to remain in an area free of large structural buildings or statues.
Those structures may collapse and give you serious (and maybe permanent) injuries or disabilities,

Alert everyone present to stay clear of any buildings as debris may fall and would cause casualties.

If you are driving a car while an earthquake occurs, immediately park the car on the side and run out. If you leave the car in the middle of the road, it might barricade other cars who are driving to safety.

Incase You Are Stuck Inside The Building

This picture above is from the Oct 8 2005 earthquake where an entire section of the flat called the Margalla Towers collapsed, killing and injuring many.

In any case, if you are trapped inside the building and cannot get out, don't panic.
Find a chair or table and see if you can duck under it. If you can't then it's still okay. Just grip the sides or the legs of the table or chair and hold tight. If you can squeeze yourself under it, then do so.

Just duck your head and pray that that you remain safe. But whatever you do, don't come out of your position.

Once the earthquake is over, look around and see if anyone is hurt. Provide as much aid as you can. Because when there is one earthquake, there is a chance that another would follow.

Home

Avoiding any casualties during an earthquake at home is similar to the same procedures taken in a building. When you feel an earthquake has struck, instantly drop whatever you are doing and run out of the house. When I said out, I meant head for the streets or at least your front lawn that isn't covered by any structure such as a statue or a hard awning.

If you have a dog or any such animal locked up in a pet house, immediately let them out and lead to the front lawn or wherever you're standing.
Every living organism in your house must evacuate.

After the earthquake(s) have passed, check your house for any cracks made by the earthquake. If you spot a few, I suggest you have them looked at immediately because another earthquake might shortly arrive, finishing what the previous earthquake(s) have started.

You must always remain prepared.

good point about getting your car to the side of the road. I hate seeing emergency vehicles trying to get around everyone.

I am confused. I just read another article that specifically warned not to go out of buildings during an earthquake but to hide under desk, chair or door bed; yet this article says to go outside. What is really to be done?
