What is Sociology?

Sociology is the study of human social behavior and its origins, development, organizations, and institutions. It is a social science which uses various methods of empirical investigation and critical analysis to develop a body of knowledge about human social actions, social structure and functions.

The term sociology

The term sociology derived from two different words socious and logus. The first word socious is latin word and logus is greek word. Socious means group and logus means systematic study. The term sociology was first introduced by French philosopher Auguste Comte in 1838 before Comte nobody used this term.

Founder of Sociology

Ibn Khaldun (Muslim Philosopher) is a founder of Sociology who was first introduced sociology as a science regarding this he said that there should be an separate science except history to study the whole social human life. He also discussed on many sociological topics. Earlier, several thinker emphasized on the study of social life, namely, Al-Farabi, Aristotle, Avicenna, Muhammad ibn Zakariya al-Razi, Confucius, Montesquieu etc. In the medieval age the name of Ibn Khaldun was taken as the founder of sociology. The ancient scholars had left so much material for sociology but the word sociology is a product of mind of Auguste Comte.

Definations

William Graham Sumner defined: "Sociology is the science of society."
According to this definition Sumner believe that the scientific study of society is sociology.

Maximilian Karl Emil Weber: "Sociology is the study of social action."
According to this definition, Weber gives priority to the study of social processes.

Alex Inkeles: "Sociology is the study of order and disorder."
Alex divided social human life into two aspects.
1: Management, Construction, Configuration, Principles, Way of life.
2: Bad management, destruction, demolitions.

Park and Burgess writes that: "Sociology is the study of collective behaviour."

William Fielding Ogburn and Meyer Francis Nimkoff: "Sociology is the study of social life of group interaction of social behaviour."

N.S Timasheff and Fasie: "Sociology is the men of interdependence."

Talcott Parsons defined: "Sociology is the scientific study of structure and function of human groups."
According to Talcott Parsons all the member of society rely on each other and thus society is a complete network.

Conclusion

In a light of above definitions:

1: The study of social life is called sociology.
2: Sociology is a science of social interaction.
3: Sociology is a science in which we will discover the constitution and principles of social human life.
4: In sociology creation of society, structure of groups, their rights, and to study and find the solution of social problems.

I love Anthropology better although it is part of Sociology, its more colourful...
