When Thinking About Freedom

Freedom is not always about the things we are allowed to do under the name "freedom".

To Be Free to Have Our Freedom

When a person thinks of freedom, the one thought might be that one will be able to do all the things that they want to do without constraints. That may not be the case at all, because with the gift of freedom should come the understanding that there is responsibility. A responsibilty to know that in order to keep one's freedom, certain behaviors are necessary within a civil society.

If you are mistreated by someone and you think that the person deserves some punishment for their misbehavior towards you outside of court, it is not a good thing to perform some vengeful act against that person. You cannot beat them up or damage their property, without the possibility of losing your freedom.

If you are filing your taxes and decide that you would prefer to receive a higher refund
therefore you create false expenses or deductions, get audited, penalized or worse for your unwise decision, jeopardizing your right to be free to use your money as you want to use it, not owing it to the Treasury Department.

If you take a fancy to someone's husband or wife and carry it further than admiration, you open yourself up to various things such as being called to court proceedings in a divorce case and beng exposed as a person who broke up a marriage perhaps. Thereby losing the freedom of having a decent reputation within the community.

Many other situations occur which call for discretion of choice, when good judgment must take place instead of selfishly deciding that this is what is wanted regardless of the consequences. Freedom is something which has to be taken as a precious quality that should be preserved and cherished not taken for granted or abused because of "free will."

There are laws, rules, some written, some unwritten or unspoken but recognized as the right thing to do. With freedom should come the forethought, if one wants to retain that freedom, that we think and rethink our decisions before committing to them for the very sake of keeping our unmitigated freedom. Freedom is not always free, it comes with a price of some sort. But one's freedom is well worth preserving, because once lost, it could be gone for a long, long time.

Great article, Freedom is nice to have, but we can only have it if we don't break rules.

Freedom is power. As they say, with greater power comes greater responsibility.
