This article is to inform Wikinut writers when to use the Writing category on Wikinut and when to place their articles in another category. About the Wikinut categories.

The Wikinut Writing Category

Wikinut originally did not have a large "Writing" category like it does now, and many people are confused as to when to use this category or when to place their articles under one of the other categories.

The writing category is basically for any creative writing (fiction), including poems. Poems should always be placed correctly under poetry or fictional verse. There is a General Non-Fiction category which would be for shorter, factual, articles, and there is also a Writing>Tips category which can be used to give information to others on how to write a better article.

Which is the Right Category

The other categories (especially the Guides Categories) are more for informative, factual, articles.

For example if you are writing a factual article about how to deal with relationship issues, but are not telling a personal story, then use Guides>Family>Relationships but if the article is about a personal relationship issue and how you resolved it then use the Writing>Family category. Or you can use Writing>True Stories or even Writing>Personal Experiences.

If you are reporting a news event, use the News category but if you are writing your thoughts on a recent news event you should use Writing>Columns and Opinions, or Writing>Society and Issues.

If you are writing about a religion use Family>Religion, but if you are writing a preachy type of article or such, please use Writing>Religion

The Writing category is riddled with lots of sub-categories so you should find something that fits.

Again if your article contains facts or other information, not just personal tidbits, then use another category. With articles that are about a place you have traveled to then you may want to use the Travel category as you probably are providing some tips and information on that destination. But... if you are just writing about your dream to travel to a certain place and not providing factual information on that place itself, please use the Writing category.

Why Does it Matter?

When you have your article in the correct category it helps readers find what they are looking for better, also your article will be linked via "Similar Pages" to other people's articles on the same theme thus people might click through to read your article too.

Additionally it makes things easier on us moderators as if we have to move an article to the correct category it takes a few seconds and can lower the points your article scores.

Mark - I have for a long time felt that the "Society & Issues" category is misplaced and should be under either News or Politics.

Agrees, i also believe , gambling should be deleted or tranferred as sub category other category (guide or money). It should be replaced by another major category which is ART : and the painting categories should have several categories for different mediums) to save existing categories, I also strongly believe that the sports sub-catehories is excessive with about 50 sub-categories (yes 50). What do you think Mark?

You will find such a category under Personal Development, but this is for factual articles, not poetry or prose.

More or less, but it could go in Travel too, or if you actually experienced a news event and are reporting it then News is okay.

Flowers and gardens too could do with some additional categories. I sometimes feel like a wolf tiptoeing through a field of sleeping sheep!

I often have to use the "Columns and Opinions" under writing. Once I raised a request for a new category under an existing one, but did not get any response from Wikinut. At least we should get an email to confirm whether the request was accepted, under consideration or rejected.

Thanks for the heads up, and I feel bad about our last conversation. I wish I had known how the system worked before I questioned you, but there are many writers out there who do not understand the system and what the moderators go through in their evaluation of their page.

Yes, I think it's always wise to double check one has the right category before writing their desired articles.

I normally head straight for the paranormal category, but I have a few other interests that draw me in from time to time. It is great to have a guide that point's me in the right direction. Thanks.

I think there is no such category because we already have so many categories, such as "Personal Experiences' or "Family" and so for, where things would fit.

Why not? If gambling has some 6 sub categories? Which can just put into one unlike poetry whic is even sub categorized under humor when in fact it should in in Writng with several sub categories of at least 5 or more, ( ode, free verse, haiku, limericks, epic, tetractys etc etc) Or it jan t means sub pages means addtional cost for the site?if that's the case better rename some excess categories and hat can be reconstructed into another level. Say IDEA category (i'd like to post a lot on that missng category). One good thing by the way is i found this thread to document we had this discussion than sending to "contact us" with out documented respondence as reference.

The "Contact us" button does not seem to get the message to the guy who needs to read it. I really am just guessing about the categories, moderator I dont make them, it could be a cost thing.

What about recipes? Is it guide family recipes?

For Recipes I think it is Guide >Recipes
Make sure they are original, include a photo, and a bit of information about the food, to make it at least 300 words.

I would also say that a good recipe provides some of the background for the food - e.g. it's origins for example being a family recipe given to me by my grandmother.
