My dog is eating ... what? An article for the dog owner about Coprophagy, why and what to do about it.

Why Does My Dog Eat Feces?

A common question for a behavior that many pet owners see. As disturbing as this is to many of us, the cause still remains a question.

It has been said that this behavior, technically called Coprophagy, is a natural instinct, genetically passed through generations referring back to wild dogs who eat the stool of their young to hide their scent for safety.

Some state that a nutritional deficiency, possibly thiamin or vitamin B would cause a dog to eat cat feces. Perhaps in this line of thought there may be a medical problem with digestive enzymes or absorption abnormality causing excessive hunger.

Maybe a behavioral problem caused by boredom, stress, anxiety and even guilt for going in the house knowing he is not suppose to and eating the evidence.

There is also taste. They simply eat feces as it may be a tasty snack.

Now most dog owners have seen their pet eat their own feces and many see the dog into the cat litter. I can tell you, if they are given the opportunity they are also attracted to chicken droppings and also horse manure.

Whatever the reason for this nasty habit one thing for sure is that the behavior needs to be corrected. A good start is to keep the yard and litter box clean, avoiding the temptation in the first place.

Change their food. Check the ingredients on the food that you feed them, be sure that there are the proper nutrients for your pet. On this school of thought perhaps add a supplement to their food that would make the feces unpalatable, there are many products sold on the commercial market. It has also been said that feeding your dog pineapple would be a home remedy for making the feces unappetizing, however some truth to pineapple is that it is a source of bromelain, a fruit based digesting enzyme which would bring us back to medical problems.

Provide some toys, some entertainment, perhaps some peanut butter in a Kong toy or hollow bone.

A little discipline, discourage the behavior, teach them not to.

Most of all love and attention, don't be too harsh on the matter, it is a common behavior seem among canine, just go down the list and try to find out why he is doing it, try different solutions and sooner or later he will kick the habit.

I have heard of the pineapple remedy also. I have not had this problem with any of my dogs and we don't have cats, so that one is out the window for them also. Also, if you are feeding your dog to much protein, then this can also make them eat their poop. It is like you have stated, it is a yummy snack. Interesting read. Thank you for sharing.:)
