A simple though admittedly expensive suggestion to reduce fire fatalities.

Why Fire Need Not Be The Death Of You

Maybe it’s because I saw a some crazy dude walk into a volcano last week; maybe it’s because last night I watched a soap opera in which a woman who had been trapped in a fire was being treated for horrific burns – yeah, I know this was fake, but the make-up will have been based on the real thing. Maybe it’s because the Pregabalin I’ve been taking for the past few years gives me weird dreams, maybe it’s a combination of all those things, but suddenly I had a really simple idea how to reduce the death toll from house fires and similar fires.

There were 275 fire fatalities in England last year (April 2013 to March this year). The figure for the world is anybody’s guess. How many of those lives could be saved if every house, every hotel, every public building were required to keep a supply of fire resistant suits? Okay, these things are expensive, but think outside the box, there are blankets and other things too. Maybe some company could manufacture a special box for babies and young kids.

Prevention is always better than cure, and great strides have been made in fire prevention and safety over the past few decades, but it’s curious no one appears ever to have thought of this. Like single line queues in the post office which were unknown in the 1960s, some things are too obvious to think of.
