Why Labrador Retrievers Make Popular Pets

Labrador Retrievers continue to be the most popular dog in America. Find out why these dogs make such good pets.

Why I Love Labs

Moira could calm people down with a lick of her tongue or a wag of her tail.
A black Labrador Retriever, Moira worked as a therapy dog who visited a home for young men with disabilities every week. They loved seeing her, and she loved seeing them.
Moira's patience, compassion and gentleness are typical of her breed. They make excellent therapy and service dogs, loyal hunting dogs and great companions for their human masters. No wonder these lovable dogs have been the most popular dog in the United States for 23 years in a row, according to the American Kennel Club.
I've owned two labs, as they are known informally: Moira and Casey, a brown lab. Both were abandoned by their owners and wound up in the Humane Society, where I adopted them. Why people chose to abandon such wonderful creatures is beyond my understanding.
Sadly, Moira, who was getting on in years, is no longer with us. Casey has carried on the tradition of a loving, loyal pet.

Labs Make Good Service Dogs

Labrador Retrievers are famous for their intelligence, patience and even temperaments. That's why they make such good service and therapy dogs. A service dog is specially trained to assist people with disabilities such as blindness, paralysis or mental or emotional issues. A therapy dog is more like a visitation dog. They visit places such as the home for young men with disabilities where Moira visited, nursing homes, hospitals and schools.
Watch how Paddy, a yellow lab, comforts children at Seattle Children's Hospital:

Moira spread love, joy and comfort to the young men she visited every week. These young man had conditions ranging from autism to mental retardation and often encountered a lot of stress and frustration in their daily lives.
Just seeing Moira was enough to bring a smile to their faces. The young men loved to pet her and fawn over her. She loved it, too.
More than once, Moira was able to head off a meltdown. She would lick the young man's hands, wag her tail or just nuzzle him. She had an uncanny ability to know when somebody was having a bad day and how she could comfort him.

Labs Make Great Pets

Labs are one of the easiest and most enjoyable breeds of dogs around. They make great family pets. They love children and are always patient with them.
They provide unconditional love and support to their owners. Both Moira and Casey were good at licking my hands when I had a hard day or work or was dealing with some other issue. I don't know how they knew I was having a tough time but they just did.
Casey is always up for a walk or a game of fetch in the backyard. He's usually in the same room with me at home. Even when I write something here on Wikinut, Casey is usually in the background, lending silent support.
Casey may be following in Moira's footsteps. Last summer, my elderly neighbor and I were literally chatting across the fence which separates our yards. Suddenly, Casey came flying out of the house. Before I could stop him, he stood up on his hind legs and leaned over the fence. Then, he gently licked my neighbor's hand and wagged his tail. He seemed to know my neighbor was vulnerable and needed to be treated with gentleness. Maybe it's time to train Casey as a therapy dog and take him for a visit to the group home.

Thanks, Stella. I think labs are at their best when they are doing therapy or service work. They know instinctively how to comfort people.
