Rundown of why people like to ride motorcycles and why it may not be worth the risk.

I don’t know about you, but the thought of getting on a motorcycle and riding on the freeway with the way people drive these days scares the living heck out of me. Yet more and more these days it seems like I see more motorcycles on the road than ever before. Perhaps it is to save on fuel costs or maybe just people are getting less afraid of dying.

As for me, it’s an experience I can definitely live without. I once took a trip to Taiwan where everyone rides scooters and was pretty much forced to ride one for the week I was there and while it was fun at times, it was also crazy and it is not something I ever plan on doing again. Motorcycles are 2-3x as fast as scooters and people drive even crazier here in the states than they do in Taiwan, so there is absolutely no way I would attempt to get on a motorcycle in my lifetime.

People that ride motorcycles say it is a lifestyle and I tend to agree with it. To them, the added danger of riding is a worth it for the freedom to be able to go places easier and faster than most vehicles can. But at what point is the risk of death or injury worth it to them to continue riding?

According to a study in 2006, per vehicle mile traveled, motorcyclists' risk of a fatal crash is 35 times greater than a passenger car.

Thirty-five times greater? That is a huge difference and not one that should be ignored.

All in all, like most things, I believe it comes down to the matter of taking calculated risks. If someone does decide to ride a motorcycle, they should do so after getting expert training so that the risks that they are taking are minimized.

At the end of the day, we all end up doing what makes us happy, but sometimes the risks just might be a little too great to do so and motorcycle riding, in my opinion, is one of those things that is just not worth the risk.
