Pinterest.com is a website in operation since 2009. It's used by a vast range of people and companies to help them promote their products or their writing. If one uses it correctly, it can be a great marketing tool.

Background on Pinterest.com

Pinterest can be a great marketing tool if it is used correctly. One must have a good strategy in place when they decide to use Pinterest.com to promote their work or their product.

According to Forbes.com, Pinterest is one of those social networking sites that has the potential to become one of those giants just like Facebook if it isn’t already in the eyes of some of it followers. With an average of 20 million users worldwide since it was established in 2009, it’s definitely making its mark in the social networking field.

What is Pinterest.com already used for

A good portion of the users on Pinterest.com already are followers who use it as a tool to help them plan parties, wedding or baptisms. It can even be used to help create seasonal wardrobes. Some online writers use it as a tool to help raise awareness of their writing by linking their articles to Pinterest.com boards. The whole idea behind Pinterest is that one creates a board and uploads photos or adds links to specific webpage’s on the internet that people find have useful ideas that they like or think are useful. But everything is public so every other person on the site is able to view any post you upload onto one of your boards.

It’s not only used for those purposes either, even designers are using it to help them promote their work. Sites such as etsy.com have designers who link their products from their online shop to Pinterest to help raise more awareness online of their products.

Well know success stories

Some success stories we hear about in regards to Pinterest is how it helped to increase traffic by 6000% to Cooking Light’s website.

It also helped to the send traffic to both Martha Stewarts websites. If companies or individuals use Pinterest correctly it can help build up your brand on the website and create a loyal following.

Pinning on Pinterest

When one creates their own board on Pinterest they upload or link a blog post or a product review to that board and then give it a name which is relevant to what it contains.

For example if a chocolate company wrote a post on how to create a fantastic Easter cake made from their products then they would reference that recipe under their product name.
But when that post then gets repined later on by other website users, it might not necessarily get repined under the same name.

They could use the recipe for other reasons, such as a child’s birthday party. Then it will be repined under ‘Laura’s Birthday Cake’. The whole point is that one piece of information will be shared among many but it will take on different names and meanings as it is passed along the networking site.

Know your followers

It’s important that you identify who it is that follows you. Are they young single woman, mothers or even retired school teachers? The reason you need to identify your followers is that these are your target market. It might seem weird to think that, but knowing what they like, follow and repin can actually help you identify what their interests are. A lot of the content on Pinterest is repined content so it's good to know that old stuff still stays in fashion and many times you'll see that some of your followers are already connected with your other followers.

The more people that you follow the more chance you have of your content being repined on Pinterest.

Pick A Strategy

If you are going to use Pinterest, then it’s wise to develop a plan of action. When you first join the website, it’s a good idea to go and just visit every area on there. See what pins are the most popular, see who the busiest users on the website are and check out what it is that they do that makes them so successful. A lot of the users on the site are very active and are very dedicated to the site and are quite frequently repining content.

Delete If You Need To

Many times what you found interesting 6 months ago might no longer be of interest to you. So as you gradually get more followers on the site, it might also be time for you to do your own spring cleaning on your followers.

Always keep in mind this is a tool for promoting your work or your products and if you find that the pins that your follower are putting up are not ones you find interesting any longer, then it might be time to start deleting them.

Plus the same applies to them, maybe they no longer find what you are sharing interesting and they have stopped repining your pins.

Understanding the website

Pinterest allows you to like, repin or comment on a pin. If you find something interesting or entertaining on the site from one of your users, but you don’t necessarily want it to be something that shows up on your boards, then you can just like it.

That way you’re acknowledging that you’ve noticed the pin which will keep your follower happy. The main reason you might like something is that it is not relevant to your brand in particular and you don’t want it to show up on one of your boards.

Conclusion

Like any social networking site, you need to take time to get established and build a brand. It won't happen overnight and you will need to work at it.

Ensure that you try to interact with your users and occasionally try to comment on pins posted as this can help you build up loyal relationships with followers.
