Witches and Witchcraft

I started wondering about witches whilst viewing one of my kids favorite cartoons Snow White and the seven dwarfs. This is my contribution...

A sinister character.

When I think of witches, immediately, my mind conjures thoughts of a woman flying on a broom, with a wicked and horrifyingly high pitched laugh. She always has a long nose and wears a black robe and black pointed hat. This is the image portrayed to most of us from young, as to moralize her sinister character.

What is a witch?

The witch allegedly has supernatural powers and she is the practioner of witchcraft. The concept of witch craft is said to be harmful, as it said to be associated with the powers of the devil. It is also known as the negative magic or black magic.

Witch Craft.

Historically witchcraft was alleged to have been applied to another person's mind, body or property against his or her will. This method of witchcraft is called spell casting. The witch uses runes or sigils on an object to give it magical powers. Spells were cast also by the recitations of incantations or by the performance of physical rituals. The use of magical herbs as amulets or potions were also popular and other means of witchcraft were also used.

Witch Hunts.

If witches were caught or even suspected of practicing witchcraft they were executed. There were many hunts for witches which historically lead to the sanctioning of witchcraft trials. The witches and suspected witches punishments were brutal as they were hanged, burned on a stake or even drowned.

Historically the last execution of witches was reported in the 18th century. In 1735 the law by which witchcraft was punishable was abolished.

Great read but I would say that in the UK, the witchcraft act was abolished much later. A Scottish woman named Helen Duncan was the last to be trial and convicted in 1944 - the 1735 act was the Witchcraft Act, when it was introduced.
A great read :D
