Yellow Sailboat

My uncle loved sailing and took my friend and I on a lake-water adventure. Even at 24, sailing with my godfather makes me feel 6 again!

The Big Yellow Sailboat

We squeeled with delight as my uncle readied the small craft. My friend, Lisa and I were as excited as little kids! We held hands and nervously pranced on the dock, waiting for our turn. Even though the sails were white and blue, I always thought of my uncles boat as the Big Yellow Sailboat, for that was the colour of the hull and that's what I always saw first whenever I would visit them at their cabin.

My uncle, calm as ever, directed his baby, his yellow sailboat to the end of the pier. He directed us to step in slowly, keep our weight low and sit down. We obediently complied.

Once in the boat, I marvelled at how small it was. Only a few short years ago this very boat was a vessel to be reckoned with in my eyes. I can remember seeing my uncle sailing into our home cabin when the winds were up and the waves were choppy. My aunt would rush out to help him pull the boat in and quickly get the sail down to safely stow it away.

How worried I felt! I'm sure they always did this in record speed, but as kids watching from the cabin, a sense of doom always seemed to creep in and our dramatic imaginations would run wild. We collectively held our breath until the grown ups returned to us, safe and sound.

As grown ups now, Lisa and I chatted with my uncle. I enjoyed the beautiful sunny day and the company I was in. And smiled to myself at the memory of the Big Yellow Sailboat.

You have a talent for bringing scenes like this one to life for your readers. Sailboats can be fun but I'm a power boat man myself.
